On February 3, Barbara Jankavski, 31, was dug up from her São Paulo grave after a court order was made to investigate claims that she died by strangulation, according to People.

Her family had pointed to markings on her body that indicate she may have died from asphyxiation.

Jankavski was found dead on November 2 inside the home of 51-year-old public defender Renato Campos Pinto de Vitto.

Authorities had previously ruled her death accidental: a heart attack from cocaine use.

In early December, São Paulo’s Court of Justice ordered the investigation into her death be sent to the Homicide and Personal Protection Department, a unit of Brazil’s Civil Police that investigates homicides.

Prosecutors previously requested further examinations and X-rays of Jankavski’s neck to search for signs of strangulation and DNA tests under her fingernails to determine if she defended herself against potential aggression.

The influencer had built a massive following of more than 400,000 across Instagram and TikTok by documenting her 27 cosmetic procedures — including a facelift she publicly shared in June — and frequently opened up about beauty standards and her dramatic transformations.

According to a police report obtained by CNN Brasil, De Vitto told investigators he had hired Jankavski for ‘sexual services’ the night she died and said the two used illicit substances together.

He claimed he noticed she wasn’t moving after falling asleep and called emergency services, attempting CPR for nine minutes before medics arrived and pronounced her dead.

Jankavski was found only wearing underwear and with an injury on her left eye and marks on her back, according to São Paulo State Military Police, per CNN Brasil.

The outlet reported that a friend attributed Jankaviski's facial injury to previously slipping and falling.

São Paulo State Military Police reported that Jankavski was found wearing only underwear, with a visible injury to her left eye and marks on her back.

A friend told authorities the facial injury may have resulted from a previous slip and fall.

The Public Security Secretariat (SSP) confirmed in a statement that Jankavski’s death was linked to cocaine use.

'Expert reports indicated that the victim's death was due to intoxication caused by a chemical substance,' the agency said.

The SSP added that investigations are ongoing and remain under the 7th Police District (Lapa).

Meanwhile, prosecutor Michele Demico Camargo granted a request from lawyers Cristiano Medina and Leonardo Santos dos Anjos to have the case reviewed by the Jury Court, per g1.

They also requested that the investigation be transferred from the 7th Police Precinct to the Department of Homicides and Protection of Persons (DHPP), which specializes in murder cases.

It will be up to a judge to determine whether Jankavski’s death should be treated as a suspected homicide, according to the outlet.

TV Globo and g1 report that the family’s legal team and the Public Prosecutor’s Office are pointing to the injury on her left eye and marks on her neck as potential signs of assault.

They allege she could have been punched and strangled while at the lawyer’s home.

Her lawyers plan to request a new forensic examination and are even considering exhuming her body, arguing the amount of cocaine in her system may not have been enough to cause death.

Other people were present at the property, including a female friend of De Vitto and another man.

In his statement, De Vitto denied assaulting Jankavski and maintained that she had been hired to provide sexual services.

He said both consumed cocaine and that she fell, injuring her eye, before falling asleep and never waking.

The Military Police found her half-naked with visible injuries.

According to experts consulted by investigators, it’s plausible that the eye and back injuries occurred in the fall described by De Vitto’s friend.

However, Jankavski’s family has criticized the investigation, questioning why forensic tests were not conducted on the three people present in the home, per g1.

They also questioned why genetic material from under her fingernails was not collected, which could reveal whether she struggled with someone.

The family further raised concerns about the police not seizing cell phones for forensic analysis.

Following the incident, De Vitto took medical leave from the Public Defender's Office, citing post-traumatic stress.

The office confirmed he remains on leave and is not currently performing his duties, per g1.
