Born in Sydney, he has also found stardom on the Broadway stage as a brilliant song-and-dance man.
Beginning his screen career in Australia, he first won plaudits for his role in the 1995 legal drama Corelli.
It was his first major job straight out of acting school after struggling in a series of low-paying part-time gigs.
On Thursday, the fan favourite shared a throwback picture of his days as a struggling actor – when he worked as a children's party clown.
Wearing classic white face makeup and a grin painted in red, he is barely recognisable in a black-and-white harlequin clown suit.

Of course, it's Wolverine star Hugh Jackman.
'Further proof of my short-lived days of trying to earn money by being a clown at kids' parties,' wrote Hugh in the caption.
Hugh has previously spoken about his time spent as a party clown.

'I can tell you – an eight-year-old's birthday party is the toughest audience I've ever had to face,' he told Marie Claire in 2023.
'A kid once yelled out, "This clown is crap!" to his mum, who was drinking out the back with the other adults.
'I brought out this carton of eggs, I smashed one and the kids laughed … I just gave them eggs and let them chuck 'em at me! That was it.
'I took off my red wig, which I'd hired … I still haven't given it back. And I never did it again. I said, 'This isn't worth $50!' That was my low point!'

Calling himself Coco the Clown, Hugh has previously shared that his child audience had been pretty unforgiving once they discovered the X-Men did not know any magic tricks.
It comes after reports surfaced recently that Hugh is not ready to say goodbye to his Bondi flat just yet.
Two years after his split from his wife of 27 years, Deborra-Lee Furness, 70, the Song Sung Blue actor has shown no sign of offloading his luxury penthouse in the famed Sydney suburb.
According to sources, Hugh is planning to hang on to the 125-square-metre property he bought in 2015 for $5.9million, as his permanent Australian base.

Worth a reported $15million, the property was previously listed for permanent rent, at $10,000 per week until February 2022.
'Why would he ever sell it?' one insider asked the Wentworth Courier. 'It's the best spot in Bondi Beach.'
The luxury property's idyllic ocean views would certainly provide the perfect backdrop for Hugh to impress girlfriend Sutton Foster, 50, with the Australian landscape.
It was also briefly listed for short–term rental in 2024 at $2,400 per night, but now appears to have been taken off the market, further suggesting that Hugh plans to make more use of the property in 2026.
