Kelsea Ballerini's elaborate updo was pulled so tight away from her face during Sunday night's Grammy Awards that she had to take ibuprofen for the pain.

The 32-year-old country crooner enlisted celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton - whose other clients include Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, Martha Stewart and Drew Barrymore.

'I did indeed have to take Advil for my head because it was a SNATCH!' Ballerini confessed to Cosmopolitan on Tuesday.

'Chris and I wanted the hair back and up to showcase the dress's high neck and low back, but wanted something structural to keep the look feeling young with a little edge.'

The 42-year-old Englishman revealed on Instagram that the six-time Grammy nominee's sculpted hairstyle was inspired by 'the pattern' of the custom ETRO halter gown selected by styling duo Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn.

Make-up artist Kelsey Deenihan used CoverGirl cosmetics on Ballerini to fully contour her complexion, which underwent a makeshift facelift from the tight hairdo.

In the end, the Patterns singer lost the best contemporary country album trophy to Jelly Roll, but they still posed for a cordial snap inside downtown LA's Crypto.com Arena.

'For my album Patterns to be nominated for best contemporary country album, the first year the Recording Academy created the category, feels like a win within itself,' Ballerini noted.

'I wrote this album with four women who are my friends, peers and heroes. That's the award.'
