Andrew Lloyd Webber’s son has revealed he had to sell a pair of trainers on eBay to be able to afford his first car.

The theatre mogul, 77, who is estimated to be worth a staggering £500 million, appears to have instilled the value of money in his five children from an early age.

Ben Forster, a star of Webber’s musical Jesus Christ Superstar, recalls how Andrew’s son revealed he was saving to buy his first car despite his millionaire dad’s wealth.

He said: ‘One of his kids had his phone under the table.

‘I thought [he was checking the] football, and he said, “No, I’ve just sold a pair of trainers on eBay because I’m saving up for my first car”.

‘I was, like, “Andrew Lloyd Webber is your dad and you’re saving for your first car!”‘

Andrew has five children – Imogen, Nicholas, Alastair, William and Isabella.

His eldest kids, Imogen and Nicholas, were born during his first marriage to ex-wife Sarah Hugill, while Alastair, William and Isabella are from his third marriage to Madeleine Gurdon.

Tragically, Nicholas died in 2023 at the age of 43 after a protracted battle with gastric cancer and pneumonia.

At the time of his death, Andrew released a brief statement, which read: ‘I am shattered to have to announce that my beloved elder son Nick died a few hours ago in Basingstoke Hospital.

‘His whole family is gathered together and we are all totally bereft. – ALW’

Andrew later revealed that King Charles wrote to him, expressing his condolences on the family’s loss.

The composer told the Telegraph: ‘He not only sent me two letters about my son but, typically for him, rather than sending flowers, he has sent bulbs that could be planted.’

Andrew has been married to his third wife Madeleine since 1991, having first met two years previous through mutual theatre friends.

Previously speaking about his wife, he gushed: ‘When I met Madeleine it was almost like getting my life back; a door has been unlocked back into a world that I’d perhaps missed in the previous years – people outside the theatre.

‘There is a world outside the Tony Awards and I think that’s what Madeleine brings to me.’

Andrew, whose hit whose hit musicals include The Phantom Of The Opera, Cats and Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, previously hit out at dynamic pricing for tickets.

He told The Sundays Times magazine: ‘I don’t think theatres should be in the business of trying to push prices up.

‘You need to break even, but I don’t like making theatre inaccessible.

‘Dynamic pricing is racketeering, really – it’s completely wrong.’
