When Alex Cooper  her former colleague Alix Earle, the last thing the Call Her Daddy host likely expected was to inadvertently set off a firestorm of allegations against her husband, Matt Kaplan.

Now, it is the podcaster's husband who has been accused of fostering a toxic work environment at Trending, the media company that Cooper and Kaplan launched together in 2023.

Between allegations that Kaplan, 42, reportedly 'berated' and 'yelled' at employees, to claims he threatened to blackball crew members from the entertainment industry, per a recent Bloomberg investigation, the Hollywood movie producer has allegedly earned a soured reputation among current and former Trending staff.

As questions over Kaplan's leadership serve to threaten Cooper's $125 million media empire, sources have shared how the Call Her Daddy host, 31, must now come face-to-face with the one thing seemingly out of her control.

'This is Alex Cooper's biggest fear: bad press,' a source exclusively told the Daily Mail.

'It matters to her. She wants to control the narrative, always. She is insecure and cutthroat all in one. She really doesn't have that many friends.'

Indeed, Cooper's rise to podcasting stardom did not come without a from her ex business partner and former roommate.

Sofia Franklyn, the original co-host of Call Her Daddy, is now set to detail her side of their fallout in a tell-all memoir, aptly called Daddy Issues, this June.

As for Cooper's fractured relationship with Earle, the 25-year-old TikTok star initially joined the couple's Unwell Network upon its launch as the host of their newest podcast, Hot Mess with Alix Earle.

Famously, Earle was in February 2025, as fans have speculated that a feud between the stars was to blame for Earle's departure.

With a public breakup and rumored behind-the-scenes drama seemingly trailing Cooper's ascent to the top of the podcast charts, it would be no surprise that Kaplan has become one of Cooper's most trusted confidantes.

But when it comes to matters of business, the source explained how the couple's unconventional dynamic appears to be more one-sided, with Kaplan calling all the shots.

'Matt pushes her to do things in her business,' the source said. 'She doesn't have a manager. Matt is always in the room. Everything goes through Matt.'

After her fallout with Franklyn in 2020, Cooper relocated to Los Angeles and took on the role of Call Her Daddy's sole creative director.

In the public eye, Cooper and Kaplan have undoubtedly solidified themselves as a media power couple.

But behind closed doors, the source suggested that 'tension' had been mounting with the couple even before allegations surrounding Kaplan's workplace behavior surfaced.

'There's a lot of tension in their marriage right now,' the source said, adding that they don't sleep in the same room. 'Matt fully courted Alex and was so sweet with her in the beginning. Once they moved in together, that's when things changed.'

Cooper's inner circle has also expressed their concern that the couple combined their businesses too early in the relationship, according to the source.

'Those close to Alex wondered why she got engaged so quickly before the Unwell deal was done,' they said. 'Now they see it. Matt is too intertwined with Unwell.'

Within the past year, the Unwell Network has produced the Unwell Winter Games, a YouTube competition series featuring veteran reality TV stars; multi-day live events in Las Vegas and Miami; Love Overboard, an unscripted dating series streaming on Hulu; and Call Her Alex, a two-part documentary for Hulu starring Cooper herself.

It is surely an impressive feat, and a testament to Cooper's ambition, that the Call Her Daddy universe has expanded far beyond the confines of the apartment where she and Franklyn recorded the podcast's first episode eight years ago.

But following a bombshell investigation by Bloomberg, which highlighted employee turnover and uneasiness among the staff at Trending, Cooper's ability to lead the company as CEO - with her husband by her side - has been called into question.

According to Bloomberg, Kaplan allegedly 'berated the staff on set' of the Unwell Winter Games - which launched on YouTube this month - and 'threatened to prevent them from ever working in Hollywood' if they messed up, which allegedly resulted in an experienced crew member 'breaking down in tears.'

A source told Bloomberg that a production manager had threatened to quit Cooper's live podcast tour, which took place in 2023, over concerns that Kaplan was 'disrespecting staff by yelling and swearing at them.'

The Call Her Alex docuseries captured some of the incident, though footage showed Kaplan telling Cooper the production manager simply 'snapped' and felt burnt out by the tour's demands.

Cooper has publicly shared that Unwell employs around 100 people. Many of those staff members, Bloomberg reported, are young adults and fans of Call Her Daddy who are eager to work alongside Cooper.

However, 'several high-level executives' have departed the company within the last year, Bloomberg reported, including Unwell's head of brand marketing, head of the network and chief growth officer.

The company declined to comment to Bloomberg at the time.

One woman who spoke to the Daily Mail about her 'bizarre' interview with Kaplan said she was not surprised about the staff complaints.

'Alex and Matt truly think they are the smartest people in the world,' said Courtney Babbin, who applied for the Event Director role at the Unwell Network in February 2025.

A source told the Daily Mail that 'tension' has been brewing between the couple even before allegations surrounding Kaplan's workplace behavior surfaced (pictured in July 2024)

Babbin recently went viral on TikTok when she detailed Kaplan's 'weird' behavior during her final round of interviews for the position.

She said in the video that Kaplan did not make eye contact with her throughout their two-hour interview and he asked her 'inappropriate' personal questions, such as what her parents do for a living.

Babbin described their meeting to the Daily Mail as 'the most uncomfortable two hours of my life,' adding: 'If my interview is that rough, I could only imagine what happens behind closed doors.'

Of course, some of Cooper's loyal fans have wondered exactly how hands-on the Call Her Daddy host is when it comes to day-to-day operations at Unwell.

Sources told Bloomberg that Cooper is 'often extremely busy keeping her show and other creative projects running,' leaving Kaplan to manage the rest of the network.

A from the Daily Mail confirmed as much, when a separate insider shared how Cooper's unbridled success has been aided by her well-connected husband.

At the time, the source said the couple plans to 'grow the Call Her Daddy brand,' with Kaplan involved in 'business decisions... behind the scenes.'

Between Cooper's successful podcast, a line of Unwell clothing merchandise and energy drinks, and the production company's slate of unscripted programming and live multi-day events, there is no arguing that Cooper and Kaplan surely have their hands in many pots.

However, it seems a major concern for the future of Unwell is whether the couple have already spread themselves too thin.

'They're trying to do everything,' Babbin said.

'It's reality TV, it's events. He told me all of their business plans, which is bizarre because I didn't sign a [non-disclosure agreement],' she continued.

'They want to do a full takeover. I think that is inevitably [going] to cause a little bit of chaos and failure.'

The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Cooper and Kaplan for comment, but did not receive a response.
