Earlier this year the star said she doesn't 'really care about being a pop star' — she just wants to be a 'star.'
The Diet Pepsi hitmaker insists her musical identity is shaped as much by instinct as by the era she grew up in.
She told The Times: 'I don't know — it's kind of confusing. I think my music is very now as much as it's a conglomeration of my life. I was a baby in the 2000s and grew up watching everything in the 2000s, so naturally that's what I was raised on.
'My mom always had on MTV. But I think the 2000s was an era of pop that will never be replicated. It was all so new. It was an era of undeniable stardom — of pop being unafraid to be provocative and risky.'
The singer, dancer and actress insists that she never set out just to be a 'pop star.'
Addison explained: 'I appreciate the people that say I'm thoughtful or strategic — that gives me a lot of credit, actually, because I don't think that's the case all the time.
'When you say you want to be a pop star, people reference someone like a Britney or a Gaga or a — there's an idea of what a pop star means. I don't really care about being a pop star. I just want to be a star.'
She said performing is what drives her, no matter the medium, adding: 'I feel like it's all one and the same to me — I just want to perform, and wherever that finds its home is where I'm putting my energy.

'I wouldn't say that every night on tour before I went onstage I was necessarily in the best mood of my life.
'Some nights, you're crying before you go on, so you're kind of acting in a way to put on this performance for people. I'm very ambitious in general. I love chasing big dreams, and if that comes in the form of an amazing script or a director that I really love and trust, I'm 10 toes deep.'
She said she has no intention of narrowing her ambitions, listing the multi-hyphenated females that came before her: 'I don't think it'll ever narrow down. I don't know why it would. Someone like Barbra Streisand is someone I've always loved and looked up to. Judy Garland too. Even Marilyn Monroe. I mean, she was doing it all. I just think: Why would you not want to do it all?'
Before that she said she uses clothes as 'mind control' because changing her outfit can affect her mood.
The social media star has opened up about her love of fashion and admitted she often wears outfits to change the way she's feeling because clothes can have a massive impact on her outlook on life.
She told PEOPLE: 'I chase whatever spark is ignited, sometimes without knowing where I'll end up. It can start with a color, or fabric, even a feeling.
'My fashion can also influence my music. Clothes are mind control.
'If I don't feel beautiful, sometimes I'll dress more glamorously or feminine in hopes that it convinces me that I am. Other times, I just wear what's comfortable or what matches my mood.'
Addison also revealed her make-up is constantly changing to suit her mood and she's taken this into her current music tour as she's mixing up her looks every night on stage.
She explained: 'Glam on tour is ever-changing for me. Sometimes it's the more glitter the better, other times it's just [make-up on the] lips and cheeks.'
She was last seen at the 68th GRAMMY Awards at Crypto.com Arena in LA on February 1
Addison previously revealed she has 'grown into' her sense of style - admitting she barely recognizes herself in photos from just a few years ago because she has changed so much.
She told ELLE: 'Looking at pictures of myself from two years ago, I'm like: I don't know her.
'I've grown into my style a lot the past few years, and as I'm getting older and experiencing more of life and different people, I'm discovering more things that I like and that inspire me.'
She added: 'I feel really comfortable with myself and my body now, but that's obviously something I've had to work on and learn how to do.
'Because it's really hard to love the things about yourself that maybe people don't want you to love.
'Learning how to style my body type and understanding what looks good and feels good on me has been a big thing.
'Every body is so different, so something that looks great on someone else might not look the same on me. And that's fine. It's about finding things you love, but in a way that makes you feel the most confident – and making it your own.'
