Actor Richard Franklin, known for his roles in Doctor Who and Emmerdale, passes away at 87 on Christmas Day, peacefully in his sleep.

The actor, known for his appearances in Doctor Who and Emmerdale, passed away ‘peacefully in his sleep’ on Christmas Day morning.

The news was confirmed via Richard’s social media account by Líam Rudden, who shared the post on behalf of his family.

He confirmed: ‘It is with great sadness, that the family of Richard Franklin have asked me to share news of his passing, early this morning. 

‘Richard passed away peacefully in his sleep. Details of funeral arrangements will be shared here when announced. Sleep well Richard. #RIP – Líam Rudden.’

The actor was known for portraying Captain Mike Yates of UNIT in Doctor Who from 1971 until 1974, when Jon Pertwee took on the leading role of the Time Lord.

Richard’s love of the sci-fi series continued after his appearance on the show as he also penned books based on Doctor Who.

He is also known for his roles in Crossroads and Emmerdale Farm, but was mainly recognised for his on-stage performances.

Richard also wrote the book Forest Wisdom: Radical Reform of Democracy and the Welfare State and was known for his activism.
