ABC Star Faces Court After Neighbour Fence Dispute Turns Violent

Myf Warhurst has become entangled in a chaotic war with her neighbour as a dispute over a fence spiralled out of control.

The ABC television presenter and her next-door neighbour, Karla Martinez, clashed over a concrete wall being built between their homes in North Warrandyte, near Melbourne.

Warhurst and her then-boyfriend, architect Brian Steendyk, objected to a section of the construction, claiming it veered onto their property.

The stoush erupted on December 28, 2022, when Steendyk took a chainsaw to a 26m area of the dividing fence, reported The Australian on Wednesday.

The trio clashed, with calls made to Triple O and Steendyk alleging Martinez struck him on the head with a piece of agricultural pipe.

‘Without warning I felt a sharp whack to my face, head and back. The force of this whack threw my glasses from my head, and tore skin from the bridge of my nose,’ Steendyk’s witness statement said.

‘Stunned, I stepped back from the fence and looked up to see Karla Martinez with a long agricultural drainage pipe in her hand standing over where I had just been crouched down and yelling obscenities to me.’

Officers from nearby Eltham police station arrived on scene, with Martinez initially charged with assaulting Steendyk.

Dramatic footage of the aftermath of the argument was recorded by police body-worn cameras.

However, the matter was dismissed by the police prosecutor before it was due to be heard in court.

‘Everything started out friendly enough and I even went over and brought her a bottle of wine to welcome her to the neighbourhood,’ Martinez told The Australian.

‘But all hell broke loose as soon as they found out we were going to start constructing a concrete wall along the property line. She hated it – the wall, design, everything.’

Martinez says the heated argument came to a head when the couple objected to the location of a portion of the fence.

Martinez conceded that the boundary line of the fence did veer ‘around 30cm’ onto Warhurst’s property.

Both sets of neighbours continued their war through legal means, with Martinez and Steendyk each taking out interim intervention orders (IVOs) against each other.

All charges relating to the case have since been dropped.

Martinez has also accused the ABC of showing ‘bias’ in an article on the clash that was published on the ABC website on May 5, 2024. The article was later removed.

Martinez says she was identified by name, while Warhurst and Steendyk were not, with Warhurst instead described as an unnamed ‘ABC contractor’.

Warhurst has vehemently denied any involvement in the publication of the article.

Warhurst and Steendyk are understood to have split since the clash.

Daily Mail Australia has reached out to the ABC for comment.

Myf is best known for her hosting role on the ABC’s long-running music quiz show Spicks and Specks.

Last year, the television star stepped down as the SBS Eurovision host.

Her co-host, Joel Creasey, also left the role.

In December, SBS quietly made the announcement that the pair would not be continuing their role leading the Australian coverage of the Eurovision Song Contest.

‘Since 2017, the most dynamic duo in the biz, acclaimed TV and radio personalities, music buff Myf Warhurst and comedian Joel Creasey have shared the joy of Eurovision with Australian audiences but are now ready to step out of the commentary booth and pass on their glittery microphones in 2025,’ the statement read.

The public broadcaster went on to thank the duo for their eight years of service.

‘SBS would like to extend their sincere thanks to Myf and Joel for their incredible work over the years.’

‘It’s been a huge honour to host the Eurovision Song Contest for SBS,’ Myf and Joel were quoted in the statement.

‘We have absolutely adored watching our Australian artists compete on the world stage and it’s been a privilege to bring that experience to our dedicated Australian Eurovision fans,’ they continued.

‘We are very grateful to SBS and Blink TV and both acknowledge that one of the best things to come out of all of this is our beautiful friendship.’

Myf and Joel also hinted that they will definitely be collaborating some time in the future.

‘We certainly aim to work together in some capacity again soon,’ they said.

‘We wish SBS and the new hosts all the very best with future broadcasts, and we look forward to getting up super early next year to watch it with the rest of Australia from the couch in our pyjamas.

‘Other than music and wind machines, Eurovision is also about joy, passion and camaraderie,’ said Paul Clarke, Australia’s Creative Director for Eurovision after hearing the news.

‘Finding hosts that embody this is never easy, but we struck gold with Myf and Joel eight years ago and have loved working with them ever since. We wish them all the best post-Eurovision.’

The duo had hosted the SBS broadcast since 2017, succeeding long-time hosts Julia Zemiro and Sam Pang.
