Iconic 80s pop star reveals the surprising reason she decided to make an epic comeback to the stage decades after quitting music for landscape gardening

Iconic 80s popstar Kim Wilde has revealed the surprising reason why she was lured back into performing decades after quitting music.

The Kids In America hitmaker, 64, left the music world behind in the late 1990s as she turned her passions to gardening.

However the musician has now revealed she was convinced to return to the music world after she was asked to sing ABBA songs at a village fete.

Chatting on Kate Thornton’s White Wine podcast she explained she was persuaded to take to the stage at a fete in her Hertfordshire village.

Explaining how she was invited to the event to sing ABBA songs she said: ‘Of course I get there and they asked if I’d do Kids in America and I was like “Oh Tony you lured me in on the ABBA ticket and now you are trying to get me to go back and sing.’

She admitted: ‘I was quite anti the whole idea of it but when I sang it the whole place went crazy.

‘So the village takes credit for getting me back on stage, which I rather love.’

Kim’s new album Closer is due to be released in January, yet the star insisted she never expected to return to the industry.

She explained: ‘I had no intention of getting back into the music industry at all. None. So I really did leave it. It wasn’t like I left and thought “I can go back when I fancy it.”

‘In my heart and in my head it was over. So when I did get lured back after a tour with the Human League it all started again.’

‘I couldn’t believe people wanted to come and see me singing Kids In America with a mortgage and a husband and not size 10 anymore and with kids and looking a little bit housewifey and they did!’

Kim’s career has been a whirlwind journey through music, TV, and gardening, marked by reinvention and enduring popularity.

Her international anthem  and debut single, Kids In America was the work of her brother Ricky and dad, original British rock ‘n’ roller Marty Wilde.

It became a defining anthem of the ’80s and at one stage she was shifting 60,000 copies a day.

She had seven more Top Ten singles in the UK but never a number one, however her reworking of the Motown classic You Keep Me Hangin’ On, which topped the US Billboard chart in 1986.

During this time she released her self-titled debut album, Kim Wilde, which included hits like Chequered Love and established her as a new pop sensation.

She went on to release an array of albums which saw even more success after she released Another Step, which included the global hit You Keep Me Hangin’ On – a cover of The Supremes’ classic that topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

In 1987 Michael Jackson invited Kim to join him on his Bad tour and open 33 shows across Europe and the UK. She observed a superstar alone in his own universe.

Two years after the tour, her own world came crashing down the day after her 30th birthday, when it dawned that her time as a pop phenomenon might be over.

After a few years of focusing on her personal life, Kim transitioned to television, becoming a popular presenter and personality in the UK.

And in 2000, she discovered a passion for gardening and authored several books.

She also became a regular presenter on gardening shows, bringing her knowledge and enthusiasm to a new audience and connecting with her old die-hard fans in a new way.

In 2006, she made a successful return to music with the album Never Say Never, which featured reworked versions of her classic hits and new material.

This marked a resurgence in her musical career.

And in 2021 she released Pop Don’t Stop: Greatest Hits, a comprehensive collection of her biggest hits, celebrating her four decades in the music industry.

Throughout her career, Kim has remained a beloved figure in pop culture, known for her distinctive voice, style, and ability to adapt to new trends while maintaining her unique identity.

In 2022 she revealed she split from and subsequently divorced her husband Hal Fowler in 2021.

The singer married writer and actor Hal, 56, in 1996 after the former couple met while appearing in rock opera Tommy.

They married within six months of meeting each other and had two children, Harry, now 24, and Rose, now 22, together.

A joint statement posted to Kim’s Twitter page read: ‘Kim Wilde and Hal Fowler wish to announce that they amicably separated by agreement last year and have divorced.

‘No third party is involved. They remain on good terms and wish only the best for each other in the next phases of their lives. No further comment or statements will be made.’

The festive event comes after Coleen shared a heart-wrenching update on her sister’s cancer battle live on Loose Women in October.

The former singer revealed that her sister Linda Nolan, 65, ‘doesn’t want to know how long she has left’ as she continues to battle breast cancer.

The Loose Women panelist felt inspired to open up about her sister’s condition after Sir Chris Hoy announced his cancer was terminal.

She explained that having already lost one sister, Bernie, to cancer in 2013, she understood how the Olympic cyclist’s family were feeling.

She told viewers that her sister doesn’t want to know how long she has left and is trying to enjoy the rest of her life.

She said: ‘I know my sister Linda at the moment, who’s been amazing and is still amazing, I’m in awe of her every day.

‘But I know, for her, one of the things she doesn’t want to know is how long she’s got left. Because she feels that once she’s given that prognosis that it would probably make her just give up trying to live.’

In a candid confession, Coleen explained her sister was still going through treatment and was trying to remain as positive as possible.

She added: ‘At the moment, she’s still having treatment and that’s what’s keeping her going you know, “as long as they’re still going to treat me then I’m going to keep on going”‘.

But despite her positive outlook, the presenter revealed her sister had gone through some darker times and thought about what life will be like when she is no longer here.

In an effort to combat this, Coleen said that she wants to do as much as possible and has moved plans forward to make sure she enjoys every day.

‘But she does say more often than not now, she’ll say things like ‘well no, let’s do that this week because I might not be here next week.

‘Or she’ll say she’s now doing more because she’s “living each day like it might be my last day” and “I might not have tomorrow,” so that mindset has changed.’ she said.

The Nolans star received the all-clear from breast cancer in 2006, but was later diagnosed with incurable secondary cancer in 2017.

Linda previously issued an update that the tumours in her brain – which were thought to be stable – have grown.

Appearing on GMB in August, Linda revealed that she is being set on a new course of chemotherapy as a result of the update – and shared the news that she could face losing her hair for the fifth time.

She also revealed the physical toll the ongoing treatment was taking on her smile, pointing to a gap in her teeth and exclaiming: ‘Look, I’ve lost a tooth!’.

Linda’s sisters also have a history of cancer, with herself, Coleen and Anne all receiving diagnoses.

During her interview on the breakfast show she said: ‘I’m just like everybody else really, I just want it to go,’ Linda said of cancer’s prevalence in her family. ‘Or leave us alone for a little while at least.’

‘You would be entitled to feel a rage at the universe that your family has been cursed by the big C,’ host Richard Madeley said to Linda, before asking if she gets angry at how it has affected her family.

She replied: ‘I asked Bernie one time, somebody said to her “Do you ever think Why me?” and she said “No I think why not me”. It doesn’t pick and choose.

‘You can’t put your name down and say you’re next in line. But we have had a rough time with it.’

Linda then revealed that her step son Lloyd has also recently been diagnosed with cancer.

‘It’s like “Go away leave us alone”,’ she said. ‘But the treatments out there are brilliant now and hopefully that will work, and if it doesn’t work he’ll (her oncologist) put me on another.

‘He said “It’s a marathon not a sprint”, so I said “Well it feels like I’m getting faster by the day”.’

The singer was first diagnosed with stage-three breast cancer in 2005 before getting the all-clear in 2006. But in 2017 she was diagnosed with a form of incurable secondary cancer in her hip, which spread to her liver in 2020.

Last year, she shared the news that the cancer had spread to her brain, with two tumours discovered on the left side of her brain which left her struggling with her speech and balance.

However, while the disease appeared to be stable in Linda’s recent updates, her latest prognosis has revealed the devastating news that two of her largest tumours has grown in size, while further cancer spots have been found.

Watt, 42, stepped down as Brewdog’s CEO over the summer and has just raised more than £2.5 million of investment for his new venture, a brand-led social media platform called Social Tip.

It will be the second engagement for Toffolo, who was previously engaged to Nigel Farage’s former right-hand man – the millionaire aristocrat George Cottrell, dubbed Posh George.

He spent eight months in a US prison over a money-laundering scandal.

The pair broke it off, then briefly rekindled their spark in 2022 before going their separate ways for good.

Watt was previously married to Johanna Basford, a Scottish illustrator whose colouring book for adults, The Secret Garden, has sold more than ten million copies worldwide.

The couple, who share two children, divorced in 2020.

Speaking to the Daily Mail in September, Toffolo admitted an engagement ring would be the ultimate gift ahead of her milestone 30th birthday on October 23.

She said: ‘It would be the ultimate 30th birthday present. You never know, I can hope and pray and I was praying yesterday so hopefully it’s not too far off.’

The Victoria and Albert (V&A) museum in London will showcase more than 90,000 iconic items from the singer’s illustrious career for fans and others to honour.

After being diagnosed with liver cancer, the late musician passed away in January 2016, at age 69.

The special Bowie collection will include musical instruments, notebooks,  guest curators and handwritten lyrics from the star, including Fame (1975), Heroes (1977) and Ashes To Ashes (1980).

It will also include costumes worn during his Ziggy Stardust period and examples of the ‘cut up’ method of writing which was introduced to Bowie by the writer William Burroughs.

A David Bowie centre dedicated to the music legend will open in London showcasing more than 90,000 iconic items from the singer’s illustrious career

Writing in his MailOnline column in 2008, Bowie explained what that method was saying: ‘You write down a paragraph or two describing several different subjects creating a kind of story ingredients-list, I suppose, and then cut the sentences into four or five-word sections; mix ’em up and reconnect them.’

‘You can get some pretty interesting idea combinations like this. You can use them as is or, if you have a craven need to not lose control, bounce off these ideas and write whole new sections.’

Small displays will tell the stories behind the singer’s albums and also look at his creative approach, including unreleased projects, collaborations, and influences.

Whilst fans need to wait until September 2026 for the David Bowie centre to open, doors to the V&A East Storehouse will open in Spring 2025.

It comes after it was claimed David could return to the stage in a hologram eight years after his death following the ABBA’s Voyage success.

Talks are said to be in place to create an animated adventure of his career and a name has been formally trademarked under a classification which includes avatars, according to The Sun

A source told the publication: ‘Avatar shows are big business and ABBA’s groundbreaking show has proved there is a huge demand.

‘Getting David on stage again in the form of a hologram would be huge.’

The Voyage virtual concert opened May 27 at a custom venue in London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, earning rave reviews from fans, critics and even ABBA members themselves.

And the recreation of music legends is likely to be a huge hit with fans and the economy.
