Idris Elba squashes James Bond rumors and declares he’s better known for not playing the role than some who have.

Idris Elba has finally put the rumours about him being cast as the next James Bond to bed.

The Luther actor, 51, revealed that he will not be following in Daniel Craig’s shoes in the coming 007 hit and is not getting a license a kill.

He admitted that he is ‘ancient’ and while he appreciated the compliment of being considered back in 2009, the opportunity is now ‘dead’.

Speaking to Chris Moyles on his Radio X morning show, Idris joked that the longstanding rumours surrounding the agent role have made him ‘more famous for not playing Bond’ than ‘some of the actors who did’.

Chris quipped: ‘There were loads of rumours flying around a few years ago about you and a certain infamous role of a British agent, right? James Bond. Right? Was that ever a thing? Was that ever close to being a thing? Did you ever want it? There were rumours, but I don’t know if you ever spoke out about it one way or the other.’

Idris replied: ‘I have several times, several sort of half-a-million times. No, it was definitely one of the biggest rumours.

‘I’m arguably more famous for not playing Bond than some of the actors who did!

‘And you know, it’s been one that I’ve taken lightly at times. You know, everyone loves Bond. Such a fantastic character, and just to me, I found it as a compliment to be considered all those years ago.’

Chris persisted: ‘But listen, you never know. It’s not dead’, but he was shot down by the acting sensation who responded: ‘Well, I mean yeah, it is. The rumour has definitely done.

‘And I mean, I’m ancient now. I don’t know what kind of Bond I’d be.’

The radio host replied: ‘But there’s always… Yeah, you’re probably right, actually.’

Not giving up on the thought of Idris getting involved in the highly-anticipated motion picture, Chris added: ‘Well, what about Bond villains? Bond villain?’

Idris said: ‘Well, I think probably, if I’m really honest, I did the Luther movie. And my instinct about doing the movie version verses the TV, is to take it bigger. Bigger, bigger landscapes and maybe fill that void.’

It comes following the recent chatter over who will be the next man to take on the iconic role.

It was recently believed that Aaron Taylor-Johnson could be getting himself a license to kill in four James Bond films after ‘endless discussions’ with studio execs – who insiders claim are hoping he can replace Daniel Craig to lead the franchise into a new age with a ‘fantasy’ twist.

The British actor, 33, has reportedly been formally offered the chance to play 007, with sources claiming bosses have already taken extraordinary lengths to secure him.

Producer Barbara Broccoli, 63, is not considering anyone else, according to insiders, who have claimed costume fittings for Aaron are already allegedly underway.

‘It is all in the details and agents and lawyers are going through all the red tape and how many movies Aaron will sign up for.

Exploring Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Bond contract: Potential for Daniel Craig’s 007 successor to star in four movies following lengthy negotiations with executives – including talk of introducing a ‘fantasy’ element to the iconic spy series

‘It is currently looking to be a three-picture deal with the option of a fourth.

‘They have done all the fittings, they have the haircut they have in mind for him, and he’s already in tremendous shape.

‘Barbara Broccoli and the rest of the producers are going to make a huge deal out of the announcement.’

Earlier this year, it was reported that the Kick Ass actor is on the verge of inking a deal to take over from Daniel as the titular spy after he retired from the role following his swansong in 2021 blockbuster No Time To Die.

Aaron was coy when questioned previously about the rumors, telling Numero magazine earlier this month: ‘I find it charming and wonderful that people see me in that role. I take it as a great compliment.’

A recent poll suggested Idris  is still the public’s number one choice to replace Daniel, despite being 51 – old for a Bond candidate – and already ruling himself out of the running in order to focus on his crime drama, Luther.

Back in August 2022, it was reported he had walked away from ‘years of talks’ with movie bosses to take over the famous role.

Last summer, Idris admitted that he used to be ‘super complimented’ by the idea of playing Bond, saying it was the ‘pinnacle.’

But he told Variety that he was turned off, when ‘those that weren’t happy about the idea made the whole thing disgusting and off-putting, because it became about race. It became about nonsense and I got the brunt of it.’

Meanwhile, Michael Fassbender has also ruled himself out, saying he thought a younger star should take on the role.

When asked by GQ magazine if he would be up for the part, the actor, 46, said: ‘To be honest, no.’

Aaron is yet to officially accept the role or make a formal comment on his standing but in March he spoke out in an interview with Rolling Stone UK , insisting he won’t be a part of the ‘pop culture studio film’ machine

In a cover shoot to promote his latest role in Sony’s next Marvel film Kraven the Hunter, Aaron muses on the direction his stellar career is heading after two decades on the big screen.

Asked directly about the reports that he is in talks to be Bond, the actor coyly replied that he ‘can only really talk about the things I’m going to show and tell,’ before tellingly adding:

‘I don’t feel like I need to have a future drawn out for me. I feel like, whatever’s drawn out for me, I can f**kin’ do better.’

While he hasn’t been cast as Bond, Aaron has taken on the lead in another big budget action franchise.

But the actor insists he can find the nuances in any character, even in Kraven – a big-game hunter whose singular goal in life is to beat Spider-Man.

‘I think there was something unique about this character, and something grounded,’ he insists, adding: ‘We’ve all had enough of seeing certain studio films, a certain kind of pop culture… where they’re churning out stuff that dilutes wanting to go to the cinema’.

‘I wouldn’t have signed onto it if I felt there wasn’t something to really bring to life with this character.’

The star adds that the extreme physical transformation he undertook to play the Marvel villain made him ponder if he wanted to put himself through it for film after film, explaining: ‘I wanted to approach it like an actor, and I’m not someone who’s just juicing up and going to the gym.’

‘I don’t necessarily want this to be my brand, doing one action movie after another. But I trained to the point where I was 200 pounds of muscle. I ate so much f**king food. I was so big.’

James Bond producers have still not made a formal announcement to confirm who will be the next 007.

All the previous actors to star as James Bond

James Bond has been thrilling cinema-goers worldwide with his adrenaline-fuelled secret missions to exotic places for more than 60 years.

The British spy, codenamed 007, has found himself fighting villains and terrorists on the moon, under water and at the top of a skyscraper.

And since his big screen debut in 1962, only six actors have played Bond (seven, if you include the portrayal of 007 by Peter Sellers in 1967’s comedy spoof ‘Casino Royal’).

The hunt is now on to find the latest Bond, with front-runners including Tom Hardy, Henry Cavill and Cillian Murphy. Now, we look back at all the previous actors to star as 007.

    Sean Connery: 1962-1971

The first star to hit the screen as Bond was the devastatingly charming Sean Connery, starring in 1962’s Dr. No.

The acclaimed Scotsman went on to feature in five more Bond flicks, before retiring as 007 in 1971’s Diamonds are Forever.

    George Lazenby: 1969

He may only have had one outing as James Bond, was met with a mixed reception

However, George Lazenby made his only appearance as the British spy in 1969’s 007 On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

He’s version of Bond, however, was met with a mixed reception. Some lauded him for a more serious portray of the spy. But others felt he was uncharismatic, and lacked the suave and charm of Connery.

    Roger Moore: 1977-1985

Roger Moore became the next Bond, featuring in seven films from 1977’s Live and Let Die, to his final outing in 1985’s A View to a Kill.

Moore’s turn as 007 brought without some outlandish and ludicrous plot lines, which featured him battling on the moon in Moonraker.

    Timothy Dalton: 1985-1989

Timothy Dalton was next to take on the mantle, debuting as Bond in 1987's The Living Daylights.

Timothy Dalton was next to take on the mantle, debuting as Bond in 1987’s The Living Daylights.

Dalton’s portrayal brought a gritter and more serious Bond to the screen, with a darker sense of humour.

He featured in one more Bond film, A Licence to Kill, in 1989 before being replaced.

    Pierce Brosnan: 1995-2002

Pierce Brosnan was the next bond, debuting in 1995's Goldeneye

It took six years for Dalton’s replacement, Pierce Brosnan, to get his outing in the 1995 smash-hit Golden Eye.

Brosnan went on to do three more Bond films during his seven-year stint as 007, which wound with Die Another Die in 2002.

    Daniel Craig: 2006-2021

Daniel Craig stepped Bond’s in 2006 with a cinematic reset of the titular spy, replacing the gadgetry of previous installments with a grittier and more muscular reinvention of 007.

His opening portrayal of a more haunted Bond in his debut film, Casino Royal, was critically celebrated – hailed as one of the best Bonds in years.

Craig would feature in four more films before finally downing his last Martini – shaken, not stirred – in 2021’s No Time To Die, becoming the first Bond to be killed on screen.

The film has been described as ‘a never-before-seen glimpse into Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame and the release of her groundbreaking studio album, Back To Black,’ according to Focus Features.

It stars Marisa Abela, 27, as Amy, while her ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil is played by Jack O’Connell.

Blake, 41, who was wed to the singer between 2007 and 2009, previously admitted introducing her to heroin and is seen by many of her fans as partly responsible for her death.

Amy predominantly based the Back To Black album on her on and off relationship with Blake, with songs that explore themes of guilt, grief, infidelity, heartbreak and trauma in a relationship.

Catching on with a wide variety of people, Back To Black sent her celebrity star soaring on the heels of five hit songs: Rehab, You Know I’m No Good, Back To Black, Tears Dry On Their Own and Love Is A Losing Game.

The on-off couple ended up getting back together to get married in 2007 in Miami, but were pictured months later after a furious bust-up where it emerged they had been taking heroin.

The following year Blake landed in prison for eight months after admitting perverting the course of justice and GBH and he filed for divorce in 2009.

The biopic has been teased for several years after Amy’s estate signed a deal to make a biopic about her life and career in 2018.

Fans have taken to social media to protest the movie and have said they will boycott it because they believe that people should ‘let her rest.’

Amy’s grief-stricken friends have also spoken out against the biopic, believing it is early for such a film to be made and fuming that the makers of the film failed to consult them about Amy’s life.

One told The Mail on Sunday that they are also unhappy at the casting of Marisa because, despite the near perfect wig she wears and the identical tattoos, they do not think she looks like the Rehab singer.

They also contrast the Roedean-educated actress’ social background with London-born Amy, who was known for her streetwise persona.

The friend said: ‘Nobody consulted us about Amy. How can it be authentic and accurate if they don’t know the real Amy or the truth about what happened in her final years? We are against this and we are upset. Amy was absolutely striking.’

And musician Neon Hitch branded the film ‘ridiculous’ and ‘tasteless’, saying: ‘I feel very strange. Can you please all let Amy rest?’

Amy’s father Mitch Winehouse, who is played by Eddie Marsan in the movie, caused shockwaves when it was revealed he is endorsing the film, which has come under fire for ‘ghoulish’ depictions of the star’s drug addiction and also filming her funeral.

Back To Black is set to come out in theatres in the UK on April 12 and May 10 in the U.S.

The film has attracted significant controversy prior to its release with many accusing the project of 'exploiting the singer's legacy' and 'capitalising off her trauma'

The next James Bond film could be a remake featuring old school villains from the past, according to insiders who claim Euphoria actresses Sydney Sweeney and Zendaya are being bandied about as potential Bond Girls.

While it has been widely reported that Taylor-Johnson, 33, has been formally offered the role of the ultra-suave British spy, sources close to the franchise have now claimed Zendaya, 27, and Sydney, 26, are among the names being considered for his on-screen love interest.

Speaking exclusively to DailyMail.com, an insider revealed that the franchise’s executive producer Barbara Broccoli was keen to inject a young starlet to take on the iconic femme fatale role.

The source also claimed that Oscar-nominated Dune director Denis Villeneuve was Barbara’s top choice to helm the new film, which could potentially be a remake.

‘How to take Bond in the future has been a talking point for years and they want to differentiate the new films from those starring Daniel Craig, which felt more “real,”‘ an insider said.

‘Barbara wants the fantasy of Bond to return, where the action is there but the larger-than-life bad guys are in the mix.

‘Villains like Jaws or Oddjob are something she would like to see again if they remake an older Bond film.’

As for the hunt for the film’s next director, Barbara is said to have set her sights on French Canadian director Villeneuve, who is behind the juggernaut that is Dune Part 1 and 2.

‘Barbara Broccoli is very eager for Denis to direct the next Bond,’ the source continued.

‘That is her dream scenario, but since he is very busy, it might be difficult to lock him down.

‘If he doesn’t do the next one, they will keep asking him to direct future instalments.

‘For what he has done with Dune and Blade Runner, to bring his talent to something as iconic as Bond is what Barbara wants. He is the number one option.’

The source added that Sweeney and Zendaya could be approached to play Bond girls.

‘When it comes to Bond girls, they will never leave the franchise, and to have a young Bond is something that will be fun to play with,’ the insider added.

‘Sydney Sweeney has been discussed, but something like that is only determined by schedule, if the casting is right and the director thought it would be right.

‘If they get Denis Villeneuve, who has worked with Zendaya, then she could be in the mix as well.’

Hiring the actresses may prove problematic given that a third season of Euphoria could start pre-production in 2025.

Although Aaron is yet to officially accept the role, once he’s signed the contract he will become the seventh actor to play the iconic British secret service agent since the franchise launched in 1962.

Last March Aaron was said to have completed a screen test at Pinewood Studios with Bond boss Barbara.

Earlier this week, DailyMail.com reported that she is not considering anyone else to play Bond besides the Kick Ass actor, with insiders claiming costume fittings are already underway.

‘It is all in the details and agents and lawyers are going through all the red tape and how many movies Aaron will sign up for,’ an insider said.

According to the insider, an event will be held where the remaining living Bonds – including George Lazenby, 84, Timothy Dalton, 78, Pierce Brosnan, 70, and Daniel, 56 – will be asked to attend to pass on the torch.

‘They all want this to be one of the biggest announcements ever and are looking to start filming sometime next year to get a movie out in theaters by 2026,’ they said.

On top of going all out for the hotly anticipated official cast announcement, Bond execs are also hoping to take the beloved franchise into a new genre.

The insider added: ‘They would like it to be a little more of a fantasy, with interesting and iconic bad guys and over the top action and not as real as Daniel Craig’s films were.

‘They are looking to steer it more towards the Pierce Brosnan films in terms of tone and referencing Bond’s past that people loved, but still incorporating moments to move the films forward.

Golden Globe winning Taylor-Johnson made his debut in The Apocalypse as a child alongside Richard Harris. He has three huge films upcoming, including The Fall Guy in which he stars alongside Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt as a famous action star who goes missing.

He will also be appearing in the hotly anticipated remake of 1922 gothic horror Nosferatu, directed by Robert Eggers and featuring a star-studded cast, including Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp and Willem Dafoe.

But Aaron’s biggest upcoming role will see him rejoin the superhero universe, as he takes on the titular role in Kraven the Hunter, the fifth film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

He has been nominated for two BAFTAs and previously won Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes for Nocturnal Animals.

Dalton’s portrayal brought a gritter and more serious Bond to the screen, with a darker sense of humour.

He featured in one more Bond film, A Licence to Kill, in 1989 before being replaced.

    Pierce Brosnan: 1995-2002

Former James Bond actor George Lazenby endorses Aaron Taylor-Johnson as next 007 amid rumors of him being offered the iconic role.

Now that Daniel Craig has slipped into his last tuxedo as 007 James Bond after five feature films, there’s been lots of chatter over who will be the next man to take on the iconic role.

One man who knows a thing or two about what it takes to be a debonair secret agent is George Lazenby, who played the fictional character created by the British journalist and novelist Ian Fleming in the film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969).

The Australian actor, now 84, is lending his support for British actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, 33, to land the coveted role, saying that he has what it takes to handle all the stunts, and all the ladies throw themselves at the beloved man who routinely saves the world.

Lazenby proceeded to tell TMZ that Taylor-Johnson’s got the toughness to handle the secret agent life.

His high praise comes amid the publication’s report that he got an offer to step into the 007 role, winning out over other actors like Idris Elba, Henry Cavill, Sam Heughan, Tom Hardy and Rege-Jean Page, among others.

Taylor-Johnson has experience doing the action role playing Pietro Maximoff in Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015), among others.

So far, Bond producers have not commented on the Taylor-Johnson rumors, which were reported by the Associated Press.

Lazenby noted that he doesn’t think Taylor-Johnson has the role yet because ‘when he auditioned for the part back in the 1960s, he went through a series of various tests and auditions before he won the role.’

The Aussie has the distinction of being the second actor to portray fictional British secret agent James Bond, though he had the shortest tenure of them, as he only starred in a single Bond film.

Lazenby had only acted in commercials when he was cast to replace the original Bond star, Sean Connery.

He declined offers to reprise the role in subsequent Bond films, in favor of having the flexibility to take other roles throughout the 1970s such as Universal Soldier (1971), Who Saw Her Die? (1972), The Shrine Of Ultimate Bliss (1974), The Man From Hong Kong (1975), and The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977).

Although he only starred in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Lazenby’s sole film in the series is now considered one of the best Bond films.

Retrospective reviews have praised Lazenby for portraying a more developed emotional life than other Bond actors, and acclaimed filmmakers including Christopher Nolan and Steven Soderbergh have declared the film their favorite of the series.

Connery would ultimately return to star in Diamonds Are Forever (1971), and then return a second time for Never Say Never Again (1983), following Roger Moore’s run as the iconic character.

Like Connery, Roger Moore ended up starring in seven Bond films during his career, with the last being A View To A Kill (1985), which was followed by two films starring Timothy Dalton and four starring Pierce Brosnan, ending with Die Another Day (2002).

James Bond was most recently played by English actor Daniel Craig, who took over the role in Casino Royale (2006), and then portrayed the handsome but viciously effective spy in Quantum Of Solace (2008), Skyfall (2012), Spectre (2015) and No Time to Die (2021).

Elba’s name had been mentioned about as much as any of the potential frontrunners, but producer Barbara Broccoli said the Luther star had ruled himself out in 2022.

While the 007 role can do wonders for an acting career and a bank account, some actors are likely to be a little weary about the multi-film commitment that’s said to span some 10 years.

‘There is a set plan, and Aaron has had endless discussions. They don’t want anybody else.’

DailyMail.com has contacted representatives for Aaron for comment.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the Kick Ass actor is on the verge of inking a deal to take over from Daniel as the titular spy after he retired from the role following his swansong in 2021 blockbuster No Time To Die.

Aaron was coy when questioned previously about the rumors, telling Numero magazine earlier this month: ‘I find it charming and wonderful that people see me in that role. I take it as a great compliment.’

A recent poll suggested Idris Elba is still the public’s number one choice to replace Daniel, despite being 51 – old for a Bond candidate – and already ruling himself out of the running in order to focus on his crime drama, Luther.

The Mail on Sunday previously reported that Barbara has made it clear she wants the next actor to portray the character for 15 years.

Outside of acting, Aaron’s personal life has generated much public interest, due to the large age gap between him and his wife.

He tied the knot with Sam Taylor-Johnson, 57, in June 2012. They share daughters Wylda Rae, 13, and Romy Hero, 11.

Fifty Shades of Grey director Sam also has two older daughters – Angelica, 26, and Jessie, 17, with her ex-husband Jay Jopling.

Their relationship has caused controversy, as the couple met while filming Nowhere Boy in 2009, which Sam directed, when Aaron was 18 and she was 42, going on to welcome their first daughter Wylda the following year.

Ryan Gosling steps into action as a stuntman turned hero in The Fall Guy trailer, tackling a real-life mystery when a movie star disappears

Just days after his show-stopping performance of I’m Just Ken at the Oscars, Ryan Gosling is heading back to the big screen in the summer blockbuster The Fall Guy.

The film – a loose remake of the 1980s TV series starring Lee Majors and Heather Thomas – recently had its world premiere at SXSW, where it earned rave reviews.

Gosling plays Colt Seavers (Majors’ character from the original series), a stuntman working on a major action film with star Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson).

While he’s working through his romantic feelings for the film’s director Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt), Colt must spring into action in real life when Tom goes missing.

The film will kick off the summer movie season on May 3, debuting alongside the Screen Gems horror film Tarot.

The trailer begins with Seavers riding a motorized scooter, as we hear him in voice-over narrating.

‘That’s me. Colt Seavers, and this is my hero’s journey,’ he said, as he veers the scooter into a subway car and flings himself through the window.

It’s shown that this was all filmed, as the director Jody (Blunt) and her editor cracking up laughing, as Colt continues his voice-over.

‘OK, I’m not the hero of this story. I’m just a stunt guy, trying to look in front of the director of this movie,’ he says, set to Journey’s Any Way You Want It.

Colt looks up at Jody and gives her a thumbs up as she nods her head and laughs, as Colt admits that he has a, ‘major crush’ on her.

Jody gets into a car with Colt, telling him, ‘We need to keep it super profesh,’ but Colt immediately says, ‘Cool. Wanna make out?’

Jody says, ‘No,’ and Colt backtracks and says, ‘Cause I don’t either, it’s not what I’m into right now,’ adding he’s into, ‘talking,’ as they both start laughing.

The film’s executive producer Gail (Hannah Waddingham) reveals that the star Tom Ryder has gone missing.

Gail asks Colt to find him, though Colt asks, ‘Why me?’ Gail responds, ‘You’re a stunt man. No one is gonna notice if you’re here or not… no offense.’

Colt shakes his head and says, ‘I mean, some taken,’ as he’s seen heading into Tom’s home, while we hear a warning Gail gives him.

‘Full disclosure, he has fallen in with some shady people, and they’re not gonna like you sniffing around,’ Gail says, as a number of rugged individuals arrive at Tom’s house.

Colt is seen walking through Tom’s home when he’s attacked by a woman with a samurai sword.

‘I’m just a stunt guy!’ Colt exclaims, though these ruffians don’t care and start firing upon him as he jumps into a river to escape.

He’s later seen talking with his stunt coordinator and best friend Dan Tucker (Winston Duke), who says, ‘This is insane, man.’

‘We’ve got drugs, bad guys and murder,’ Colt says, as he’s seen pulling back a curtain and seeing Tom in an ice bath… as he stumbles back in shock.

Colt is seen fighting inside a big metal structure that’s being dragged by a truck while he tells Jody that they’re gonna, ‘beat the s**t outta them.’

Jody gets punched on a rooftop and he shakes his head and says, ‘I never forget a fist… I didn’t mean it like that,’ before he breathes fire onto his assailants.

The action-packed trailer winds down with more big set pieces including more from the metal structure fight.

The trailer also shows Colt and his trusty dog driving a truck that they jump off a makeshift ramp as an enemy says, ‘that stunt guy is crazy.’

The final shots show Colt giving two middle fingers as he falls off of a helicopter while Jody reviews footage of a huge shirtless actor.

British actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson offered the role of James Bond and set to sign contracts this week

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has reportedly been formally offered the opportunity to play James Bond, putting an end to months of speculation regarding Daniel Craig’s successor.

The actor, 33, is yet to officially accept the role, but should he do so he will become only the seventh actor to play the iconic British secret agent since the franchise launched in 1962.

A recent poll suggested Idris Elba was still the public’s number one choice for the role, despite being 51 – old for a Bond candidate – and already ruling himself out of the running in order to focus on his crime drama, Luther.

But Aaron, who is known for his roles in Nocturnal Animals, Kick-Ass, Nowhere Boy and Avengers: Age of Ultron, has landed the coveted part, reports The Sun.

A source said: ‘Bond is Aaron’s job, should he wish to accept it. The formal offer is on the table and they are waiting to hear back.

‘As far as Eon is concerned, Aaron is going to sign his contract in the coming days and they can start preparing for the big announcement.’

MailOnline has contacted representatives for Aaron for comment.

Responding to the rumours that he could step into Bond’s shoes last week, Aaron played coy, telling Numero: ‘I find it charming and wonderful that people see me in that role. I take it as a great compliment.’

He began acting as a child and has seen his career go from strength to strength, with three huge film appearance this year alone.

Aaron will be starring as a famous action star who goes missing in The Fall Guy, opposite Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt.

And he will also be appearing in the hotly anticipated remake of 1922 gothic horror Nosferatu, directed by Robert Eggers and featuring a star-studded cast, including Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp and Willem Dafoe.

But Aaron’s biggest upcoming role will see him rejoin the superhero universe, as he will be playing the titular role in Kraven the Hunter, the fifth film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

He also has been nominated for two BAFTAs and previously won Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes for Nocturnal Animals.

The Bullet Train star’s name has been in the running for Bond for a while now, alongside fellow A-list contenders like Tom Hardy, Henry Cavill and recent Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy.

In October last year, the Mail exclusively revealed that Aaron was the ‘one to beat’ to take the iconic role, while Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan was looking likely to helm the next film in the franchise.

The insider said: ‘Aaron Taylor-Johnson is currently the hot favorite to step into the iconic role, he’s the first choice for Barbara Broccoli – he is the one to beat.’

They added of Christopher: ‘He is extremely interested in doing something very different with the franchise. If he can get his way with producers, then he is all for it.’

It was previously reported that the Oscar-winning director wanted to direct the next Bond film as a period piece set in the same as the original source material – something that director Quentin Tarantino had previously wanted to do with Casino Royale, but was turned down.

However, the insider added: ‘Whether Nolan coming on board will affect the casting of Aaron Taylor-Johnson is currently a grey area – as he’s very particular with who he works with.’

Christopher is known for consistently using similar casts in his films, working with fellow rumoured Bond stars, Tom and Cillian, on multiple films, including Inception, Dunkirk and The Dark Knight Rises.

Christopher worked with Aaron on 2020 film Tenet, in which the actor played military commander Ives.

In March 2023, Aaron was said to have completed a screen test at Pinewood Studios with Bond boss Barbara and impressed her.

According to the Mail On Sunday, Barbara has made it clear she wanted the next actor to portray the character for 15 years.

Outside of acting, Aaron’s personal life has generated much public interest, due to the large age gap between him and his wife.

He tied the knot with Sam Taylor-Johnson, 57, in June 2012, and they share daughters Wylda Rae, 13, and Romy Hero, 11.

Sam previously spoke about falling for Aaron on the set, but insisted nothing happened until the movie wrapped.

She said: ‘I managed to hold off really until almost the end of the film. We weren’t even together then. Maybe feelings were there but un-acted upon.

‘The thing is, we had quite a psychic link when working together. I knew from a flicker of an eyelash what kind of performance I was going to get. I felt that link almost from day one of meeting him.’

The news about Aaron’s offer to play the world’s most famous spy comes after fans cast their votes to who they wanted in the role.

A study of 2,000 Brits by Lottoland, saw Idris come out on top, with some unconventional choices thrown into the mix, like Emilia Clarke, James Norton, Emily Blunt and Helen Mirren.

Bond is famed for turning those who play 007 into global superstars and the franchise isn’t shy of casting left-field stars to take on the role.

The late Sean Connery, one of the most recognisable Bonds, had only featured in a series of TV films when he accepted the role of the titular British spy in 1962’s Dr. No, catapulting him to international fame.

But while Idris was the top choice, fans may end up disappointed after the actor has ruled himself out several times and has even allegedly put forward a list of proposed names to play 007 instead.

Back in August 2022, it was reported he had walked away from ‘years of talks’ with movie bosses to take over the famous role.

And in February 2023, he insisted: ‘You know, a lot of people talk about another character that begins with J and ends with B, but I’m not going to be that guy.’

The late Sean Connery, one of the most recognisable Bonds, had only featured in a series of TV films when he accepted the role of the titular British spy in 1962's Dr. No, catapulting him to international fame (pictured)

Last summer, Idris admitted that he used to be ‘super complimented’ by the idea of playing Bond, saying it was the ‘pinnacle’.

But he said he was turned off when ‘those that weren’t happy about the idea made the whole thing disgusting and off-putting, because it became about race. It became about nonsense and I got the brunt of it.’

James Bond producer Barbara previously admitted it will take a long time to choose Craig’s 007 replacement.

The filmmaker insisted it’s not as easy as picking an actor to take on the iconic role of the suave spy.

Speaking to Variety, Barbara said: ‘It’s a big decision. It’s not just casting a role. It’s about a whole rethink about where we’re going.’
