A Tribute to Alex Trebek: Commemorative Stamp Set for Release on July 22nd

The United States Postal Service has honored late Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek with a new stamp set to be released on July 22 in honor of his birthday.

Jeopardy! host Ken Jennings, 50, announced on Friday’s episode of the quiz show that the US Postal Service will issue a Forever stamp to honor Trebek.

‘I’m excited to announce that the next icon to receive a stamp will be our very own Alex Trebek. The stamp will be officially released on July 22, on what would have been Alex’s 84th birthday,’ Jennings said.

The stamp features the show’s familiar white text on a blue background and reads: ‘This naturalized U.S. citizen hosted the quiz show ‘Jeopardy!’ for 37 seasons.’

Underneath and upside down is the correct answer: ‘Who is Alex Trebek?’

A pane of 20 identical stamps was designed to resemble the video monitors from Jeopardy! with categories on top including: ‘GAME SHOW HOSTS’ and ‘FAMOUS ALEXES’. A photograph of Trebek was on the left and part of the Jeopardy! set was in the background.

The commemorative stamp included his name above the photo and the inscription ‘Jeopardy! host and television personality 1940-2020.’.

The stamp was designed by Antonio Alcalá, an art director for USPS, using photography provided by by Sony Pictures Entertainment and hand lettering by Marti Davila, according to a release by the USPS.

The Alex Trebek stamp as a Forever stamp will always be equal in value to the current price of first-class one-ounce mail.

The USPS will issue the stamps beginning on July 22 and a sheet of 20 stamps will cost $14.60. The price of Forever Stamps are scheduled to increase in July from 68 cents to 73 cents.

Presale for the stamps started on June 21 at usps.com and it will be dedicated on July 22 during a ceremony at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California.

The first-day-of-issue event will include Trebek’s wife Jean Trebek as well as current Jeopardy! host Jennings.

Trebek died in November 2020 at the age of 80, and his passing was mourned by fans who called the brainy quizmaster a nightly source of information and sheer joy.

He had hosted more than 8,200 episodes of Jeopardy! over 37 seasons.

The death of Canadian-born Trebek, who in March 2019 revealed his diagnosis of stage IV pancreatic cancer, was shared on the show’s official Twitter account.

Trebek passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends, the show’s tweet said.
