Quincy Jones once found himself embroiled in a short-lived fall-out with late rapper Tupac Shakur, who had slammed him for dating white women.
The music icon died aged 91 on Sunday night, his family announced in a statement on Monday.
But decades before his death, Quincy faced the wrath of the Changes hitmaker, who took umbrage at the fact Jones was in a relationship and having children with a white woman.
The music producer was married to Twin Peaks actress Peggy Lipton between 1974-1990, with the pair going on to have children Kidada Jones, 50, and Rashida Jones, 48.
Earlier this year, Parks and Recreation actress Rashida reflected on the beef with Tupac, who made disparaging remarks about her father in a 1993 interview with The Source magazine, telling the publication of Quincy at the time: ‘All he does is stick his d**k in white b*****s and make f****d up kids.’

At the time, a then 17-year-old Rashida fired back at Tupac, calling him out for his ‘stupidity’ and ‘ignorance’ while remarking that he was ‘self-absorbed and indulgent’.
In an open letter she wrote in The Source at the time, she vented: ‘Where the hell would you be if Black people like him hadn’t paved the way for for you to even have the opportunity to express yourself?’
In an interview with The New Yorker back in July this year, Rashida looked back on the row, recalling how Tupac, stage name 2Pac, became ‘family’ after apologising.
She shared: ‘I kind of understand the nuance more now that I’m older. It just felt like a completely unwarranted attack.
‘My dad doesn’t work for the government. He’s a music producer. How he chooses to live his life and who he loves is just his own business, and I’ve always felt that way.’
She told how despite being ‘so mad’ at the California Love singer, she soon saw a ‘new perspective’ from him after he reached out.
After her letter to him was published, Tupac approached her sister Kidada in New York to apologise, believing she was Rashida.
The encounter then led to Tupac and Kidada falling in love and beginning a romance, with Tupac eventually growing close to the family.

Rashida added in her interview: ‘It resolved itself really nicely, because when I met him, he immediately apologised to me, immediately apologised to my dad. We sat down and had a really good conversation about it, and then he was family.’
Meanwhile, back in 2012, producer Quincy told how he ‘wasn’t happy’ when he first discovered his daughter was dating Tupac amid their fall out.
Speaking to the New York Times magazine at the time, he said: ‘I wasn’t happy at first. He’d attacked me for having all these white wives. And my daughter Rashida, who was at Harvard, wrote a letter to The Source taking him apart.’
Quincy went on to say that he confronted Tupac at the time and insisted they needed to talk, but the music star admitted it was unwise in case Tupac ‘had a gun’.
He went on: ‘I remember one night I was dropping Rashida at Jerry’s delicatessen, and Tupac was talking to Kidada because he was falling in love with her then.
‘Like an idiot, I went over to him, put two arms on his shoulders and said, “Pac, we gotta sit down and talk, man.” If he had had a gun, I would’ve been done. But we talked. He apologized. We became very close after that.’

Meanwhile, in a 2018 chat with GQ, Quincy once again reflected on the beef, noting that Tupac most likely hit out because he was ‘Just trying to be a rapper’, putting the outburst down to the ‘swagger’ that was ‘part of their game’.
Slamming the overall criticism against him having a white wife, Quincy fumed: ‘I don’t give a f**k. Because they think that’s all you like, but that’s stupid, man.
‘Here’s what you’ve got to understand: The interracial thing was part of a revolution, too, because back in the ’40s and stuff, they would say, “You can’t mess with a white man’s money.… Don’t mess with his women.” We weren’t going to take that s**t. Charlie Parker, everybody there, was married to a white wife.’
Tupac died aged 25 in 1996 after being fatally shot.

His publicist Arnold Robinson said he passed away on Monday night surrounded by his family at his home in the Bel Air area of Los Angeles. No cause of death was given.
Jones’s family – which includes his actress daughter Rashida, who played Karen Filippelli in The Office – said in a statement: ‘Tonight, with full but broken hearts, we must share the news of our father and brother Quincy Jones’ passing.
‘And although this is an incredible loss for our family, we celebrate the great life that he lived and know there will never be another like him.’
Along with Rashida, Jones – known to friends as ‘Q’ – is survived by daughters Jolie Jones Levine, Rachel Jones, Martina Jones, Kidada Jones and Kenya Kinski-Jones; son Quincy Jones III; brother Richard Jones and sisters Theresa Frank and Margie Jay.
Jones’s final Instagram post yesterday wished his daughter Martina ‘Tina’ a happy birthday, and featured a photograph of the two smiling together. It said: ‘Happy Birthday to my Tina Beena! So proud to be yo papa! Big hug, I love you eternally.’
