Sophia Bush has revealed that she was in the midst of receiving fertility treatment when she realised she had to end her marriage to Grant Hughes.
The actress, 41, shocked fans when she filed for divorce last August after just 13 months of marriage.
Yet in a candid chat with Glamour magazine, she explained that she had doubts before their big day and these were only solidified when she went through the ‘painful and heartbreaking’ process to conceive.
Reflecting on their union’s rocky start, she confessed that two months before tying the knot she came ‘close’ to calling of the wedding, but admitted: ‘Instead of running away, I doubled down on being a model wife.’
Revealing what sparked the demise of the split, she continued: ‘But after the wedding I found myself in the depths and heartbreak of the fertility process, which was the most clarifying experience of my life.’

She detailed enduring endless ultrasounds, hormone shots, blood draws that left scar tissue in her veins and retrievals, ‘while simultaneously realizing the person I had chosen to be my partner didn’t necessarily speak the same emotional language I did.’
Six months into the process, Sophia realised she had ‘made a mistake’ and jumped a the chance to perform in 2:22 A Ghost Story in London’s West End.
She credited performing with helping to build her back together, yet her stint came to an abrupt end when she had to withdraw while battling a nasty virus that saw her hospitalised.
Having returned home to the States, Sophia focused on her health while her marriage continued to crumble.
In June, Grant posted a sweet Instagram tribute to Sophia on their first wedding anniversary, and in turn, the actress felt ‘mounting pressure from strangers online waiting for me to post something.’
Having selected a wedding picture, Sophia ‘wrote a really nice story about the people in that picture. Except it was just that: a story.
‘I typed something about how incredibly happy I was and tried to drown out the familiar voice in my head. Make it look easy. Make it look perfect. If your smile is shiny enough, maybe no one will notice that up close all of your teeth are broken. But sometimes broken is just broken.
‘I hit post. And then I walked into the bathroom and threw up.’

Shortly after splitting from Grant, Sophia started dating sportswoman Ashlyn Harris, 38, who herself had just split from fellow soccer star Ali Kreiger – prompting the pair being forced to deny they had been unfaithful in their marriages.
Sophia said there were many ‘blatant lies and violent threats’ toward her, adding: ‘There were the accusations of being a home-wrecker.
‘The ones who said I’d left my ex because I suddenly realized I wanted to be with women—my partners have known what I’m into for as long as I have (so that’s not it, y’all, sorry!),’ she said, making it very clear she was open with her former partners that she liked women.
Now she feels very comfortable in the queer community as she has experienced so much ‘safety, respect, and love in the queer community, as an ally all of my life, that, as I came into myself, I already felt it was my home.’
Sophia asserted that her sexuality ‘exists on a spectrum.’
She concluded: ‘Right now I think the word that best defines it is queer. I can’t say it without smiling, actually. And that feels pretty great.’
