Aussie Icon Bryan Brown’s Shocking Fire Injuries: ‘I Burnt My Face and Arms Off’

Bryan Brown has revealed the shocking injuries he suffered after being caught in a horrifying fire ordeal.

The Aussie actor told Daily Mail at this week’s Tropfest launch that he sustained serious burns to his face and arms during the incident in the lead-up to filming his hit series Boy Swallows Universe. 

Earlier this year, fans flooded social media to gush over the 78-year-old’s ripped figure in the popular Netflix show. 

However, when asked about the physical preparation that went into his role, Bryan said that his appearance wasn’t just the result of time spent in the gym. 

‘I shouldn’t tell you this, but I will,’ he began.   

‘About three months before I got caught up in a fire and burnt my face off and my arms off.

‘By the time I came to do it [Boy Swallows Universe], I was all healed but I’d gone bald and my hair had grown quite solid.

‘So I think the preparation was getting better.’

Bryan went on to assure that he had made a full recovery and was feeling fine after the accident.

In the hit series, Bryan plays the role of Slim Halliday, a man who was charged over the death of a taxi driver and has escaped from the notorious Boggo Road Gaol several times.

During the first episode, he showed off his muscular figure in a blue singlet as he taught Felix Cameron’s character how to drive.

Fans took to X, previously Twitter, to share their shock over the actor’s look and ‘fantastic performance’.

‘Bryan Brown is still extremely handsome. I’m watching Boy Swallows Universe and I have a picture in my photo album when he came into my place of work,’ one said.

Adapted from Trent Dalton’s iconic novel, Boy Swallows Universe is an extraordinary tale that explores the trials and tribulations of two brothers – Eli (Felix Cameron) and August (Lee Halley) – who grow up in 1980s suburban Brisbane.

The series was released in full in January 2024, and plenty of Netflix subscribers binged their way through all seven-plus hours – hailing the show as ‘beautiful and brilliant.’

Staying true to its Aussie roots, the series stars an A-List lineup of Australian actors, including Phoebe Tonkin as Frances Bell, Eli’s mother.

The troubled tale first tugged at the heartstrings of many Australians when the book was released in 2018 – with particular elements of the story revealed to be loosely inspired by some of the author’s very own childhood experiences.
