Banana Republic was founded founded in 1978 by Mel and Patricia Ziegler, who originally called the apparel company ‘Banana Republic Travel & Safari Clothing Company’.

The name is a term used in political science to describe a country that has become unstable while relying on the export of its natural resources. It was first coined by O. Henry in 1904 to describe the fictional Republic of Anchuria in the book Cabbages and Kings.

Gap Inc. acquired Banana Republic in 1983 and it recently has pivoted to home furnishings.
