Passenger star David Threlfall looks unrecognisable from his appearances in Shameless, as his character in new ITV drama Passenger was shown in new images.

David, 70, played the much-loved character of Frank Gallagher in Shameless, where he was often seen puffing on a cigarette and swigging a can of beer.

Throughout his time on the show, which lasted nearly a decade, Frank became his known for his sailor-esque mouth, drunken antics, as well as developing a penchant for getting himself into difficult situations.

Just over ten years after the show ended, he looks completely different from the beer-drinking Mancunian he played in Shameless.

In the first pictures released of his character Jim Bracknell, he can be seen with long white hair and a wiry beard, in a number of eerie snaps from the upcoming show.

Passenger is set in the fictional northern town of Chadder Vale. Other cast members include Wunmi Mosaku (Loki) and Rowan Robinson (So Awkward).

He also works with fellow Shameless actors Sean Gilder, who played Paddy Maguire, Jo Hartley (After Life) and Coronation Street’s Debbie Rush, who portrayed Anna Windass in the long-running ITV soap.

Away from Shameless, actor David has also acted in other TV roles including Funny Woman, Ricky Gervais’ dark comedy Afterlife, Troy and Charles Dickens’ adaptation Dodger.

He has also appeared on the big screen, with roles in films such as Nowhere Boy, Hot Fuzz and Black Sea opposite Jude Law.

However, his new role in Passenger is completely different, with his character, a fracking manager, finding himself blamed for a series of mysterious goings on in the town of Chadder Vale.

Written by Broadchurch star Andrew Buchan, Passenger follows ‘a close-knit community who are unwilling to face their fears of change, of outsiders and of the unknown.’

The synopsis for the show reads: ‘As a series of strange happenings and increasingly shocking crimes start unfolding within the town, the residents resort to short-sighted theories and blame outside influences such as the fracking site and its manager Jim Bracknell (Threlfall).

As things become stranger, so the people push back on Riya’s absurd notion that something is not right with this town. But what are they so afraid of?’

Passenger will air on ITVX and Britbox on Sunday March 24
