When beaming Oscar winners take the stage to seize hold of their golden statues next month, take a good look at their hands.

There’s a reason they’re ready for their close-up.

The latest trend among surgery-loving Hollywood stars is known as hand rejuvenation, a procedure to ‘de-age’ their wrinkly mitts.

Celebrity dermatologist Dr Mariano Busso says the treatment, which can cost up to £5,000, has become the latest ‘go-to’ surgery ahead of an appearance on the red carpet. Dr Busso said: ‘Hands are an instant giveaway to someone’s true age. They are frequently neglected.

‘People spend a fortune on their faces, breasts and bodies to lift, fill and tighten them.

He uses lasers to zap away broken blood vessels and a procedure called sclerotherapy to collapse unsightly bulging veins.

Sclerotherapy uses a saline solution, with ingredients including sodium tetradecyl sulphate and chromated glycerin, which collapses big veins and causes them to scar, forcing the body to re-route blood through smaller, healthier veins.

Former supermodel Janice Dickinson, 69, says she is planning to have hand rejuvenation next week. ‘I take pride in what I look like. Dr Busso did my thread lift [a facial anti-ageing procedure], but my hands – that’s a different story. They could use some TLC. I’d like my hands to match my face.’

The final cost of the procedure depends on the amount of filler used to smooth the wrinkles, the type of laser used and how much time the doctor needs to spend with each patient. Results last for 12 to 15 months.

Madonna, no stranger to plastic surgery, is rumoured to have undergone hand rejuvenation, according to reports in the US.
