Cheryl Hines has come to the defense of her TV husband Larry David after he attacked Elmo on live television.

The 58-year-old actress was asked about David, 76, recently beating up on the beloved Sesame Street puppet character on Wednesday’s episode of SiriusXM’s Literally with Rob Lowe.

‘Larry doesn’t care,’ said Hines, who portrayed David’s wife Cheryl David on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm.

‘He doesn’t care. He doesn’t care about a puppet! He doesn’t care about human beings,’ quipped podcast host and actor Lowe, 59.

‘By the way, that’s not on Larry. That’s on whoever decided to put those two on the couch next to each other. Let’s be honest,’ Hines said in defense of David who has cultivated a curmudgeon persona.

‘One hundred percent,’ Lowe agreed.

Lowe joked that it was a ‘match made in heaven’ having ‘the sweetest, nicest characters in the history of the world and one of the darkest misanthropes in the history of the world.’

Hines said that David has ‘made a career out of telling people he does not care how you feel and does not care if he ever hurts your feelings. That’s what Larry’s built a career on.’

‘Poor Elmo. Elmo didn’t ask for that. Whatever happened, Elmo did not ask for it. I’m sure,’ Hines said.

Hines was on the podcast promoting the 12th and final season of Curb Your Enthusiasm that premiered on Sunday on HBO.

David also was promoting the season premiere last week on NBC’s Today show when he crashed the set and spontaneously attacked Elmo on live TV.

Elmo and David were set to have separate interviews with Elmo present on stage alongside hosts Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb and Craig Melvin.

All was going well until David strolled on stage and proceeded to grab Elmo’s face and jokingly take swings at him, much to the shock of the hosts.

‘Oh my god!’ exclaimed Guthrie, as Kotb and Melvin put their hands over their mouths in shock.

‘Larry, you’ve gone too far this time!’ Guthrie quipped.

Elmo then extended an olive branch to David, telling him, ‘Come back to the couch and let’s talk about how you feel,’ to which David fired back, ‘Somebody had to do it!’

Meanwhile, Elmo’s dad, Louie, who stood next to him, quipped, ‘Ask permission before you touch people, Larry.’

A surprised Al Roker, who was set to do a weather report, also chimed in, stating, ‘Didn’t see that coming.’

Guthrie, 52, and Kotb, 59, asked David to apologize to Elmo, ‘from the heart,’ to which he responded, ‘from where!?’

‘What organ are you talking about?’ David continued to joke.

David, however, then looked at the camera and said, ‘Elmo, I just want to apologize.’

Elmo said he accepted David’s apology while Louie added that it was ‘very big’ of him.

Star Trek: The Next Generation star Wil Wheaton, 51, unloaded on David for throttling Elmo and branded him an ‘a**hole’ in a Facebook post.

Wheaton said his attack on Elmo had brought to the surface distressing memories of his father physically abusing him when he was younger.

Social media users were swift to react to Wheaton’s post, with several fans defending his impassioned post, while others mocked him for being overly sensitive about the fake assault of a puppet.
