Kristin Cavallari mourns the loss of her ‘sweet and loving’ German Shepherd Kona at age 12

Kristin Cavallari announced the ‘heartbreaking’ passing of her beloved German Shepherd Kona on Tuesday’s episode of her podcast, Let’s Be Honest.

At age 12, little Kona had a ‘great’ lifespan (average age is 10) for her breed and it wasn’t until the last six months that she ‘took a downhill turn’ health wise, losing her eyesight and hearing.

‘God, it is so hard, the physical act of putting a dog down,’ the 39-year-old Uncommon James founder recalled.

‘If you guys haven’t experienced this before, it’s intense. I was laying there with her, and I was petting her. I’m gonna try really hard not to cry.’

Cavallari originally adopted the canine companion in 2017 when her then husband Jay Cutler was playing for the Miami Dolphins, and she needed protection for their three children at home in Tennessee.

‘Kona was immediately so sweet and loving with both Jaxon and I. And I immediately was just like, “This is my dog, man,”‘ the Denver-born beauty said.

‘This is my girl. And she was. She was always, always my dog. Kona would follow me everywhere, and she always had eyes on me.’

Cavallari spent ‘months of not sleeping’ until ‘attack dog’ Kona dutifully positioned herself on the top of the staircase to better protect her humans.

‘It was the best feeling in the entire world,’ the millennial mama remembered. ‘And so that was Kona in a nutshell, just the most bada**, amazing dog on the planet.’

Kona’s death deeply affected Cavallari’s 11-year-old son Jaxon and 10-year-old daughter Saylor, but her 13-year-old son Camden took it the hardest.

‘Camden texted me, and he was like, “I can’t be here. Can you please come get me?”‘ the Microsoft Copilot paid partner said of picking him up from school.

‘He got in my car and started bawling, crying. Seeing Camden so sad, oh my god, it just wrecked me. It wrecked me. This is like the first big death for them.’

Cavallari has two other dogs, aged three and two, but she will eventually adopt another loyal German Shepherd after spreading Kona’s ashes in their yard.

Meanwhile, Cutler has custody of their kids ‘every other weekend’ following the 2020 end of their seven-year marriage, which finalized in 2022.

The 42-year-old retired NFL quarterback – who’s engaged to fiancée Samantha Robertson – last made headlines in August for cutting a plea deal stemming from his 2024 DUI and gun possession arrest.

Cutler’s BAC was three times the legal limit, so his Tennessee license was suspended for 12 months.

‘As fun as it was, it was not normal for me anymore,’ the Uncommon Beauty founder shared last July on her podcast.

‘Being on TV is not part of my normal life anymore. I’ve said it a thousand times about my previous shows, but there is a level of stress that comes with being on a TV show. There just is.’

Cavallari first found fame on two MTV reality shows Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County (2004)-2006) and The Hills (2009-2010).
