Jennifer Lawrence says the most difficult acting role she had to prepare for was that of a Russian spy in the 2018 thriller Red Sparrow.
The Academy Award-winning actress, 35, appeared Wednesday at New York City’s Kaufmann Concert Hall for a 92NY-sponsored Q&A session.
In Red Sparrow, the Kentucky-born star portrayed Dominika Egorova, a Russian ballerina who begins serving a spy for the government.
The Silver Linings Playbook actress explained to the panel’s moderator Josh Horowitz why she felt Red Sparrow marked the toughest role she’s had to get herself ready for.
‘Technically speaking, Red Sparrow, because I had to learn a Russian accent,’ Lawrence said of the film, which Francis Lawrence directed, according to People.
In an informational segment featured on the home version of the film, Lawrence explained how there was a physical component to the role of Dominika that she was mindful of as well.

Said Lawrence, ‘Part of preparing for Dominika was the physical training with the ballet.
‘It was something that was on my mind constantly throughout the entire script.’
Kurt Froman, an associate choreographer on the film, explained that Lawrence had trained six days a week for three hours a day to perfect her ballet skills.
The Hunger Games star told Vanity Fair in 2018 that she also shed pounds for the role of the one-time ballerina.
Said the actress, ‘Red Sparrow was the first time that I was really hungry, and disciplined.
‘I can’t be in character as an ex-ballerina and not feel like an ex-ballerina.’
Lawrence explained to the magazine her strategy of filming the dancing scenes first while she had been dieting, so she could resume eating normally for the remainder of filming.Â
Said Lawrence, ‘I can’t work on a diet. I’m hungry. I’m standing on my feet. I need more energy.
