George Clooney reveals the brutal truth behind his ‘no-fights’ marriage to Amal

George Clooney has opened up about the surprising reason he and his wife Amal Clooney have ‘never’ argued during their 11 years of marriage.

The Hollywood icon, who married Amal in 2014, reflected candidly on relationships during an interview with the Los Angeles Times when pushing back over disbelief at the claim.

‘As someone who has been married nearly 30 years, I find that hard to believe,’ the interviewer admitted, which prompted Clooney to point to age as the key difference.

‘Well, how old were you when you got married?’ the Ocean’s Eleven star asked.

When the interviewer replied, ‘I was 32,’ Clooney didn’t miss a beat.

‘There’s a difference. I was 52. There’s a reason why insurance rates when you’re 16 to 25 are off the charts,’ he explained.

The performer continued: ‘It’s aggression. I had no intention of getting married again, but I fell madly in love with the person who changed that. We have kids. I didn’t want to have kids. Everything changed because I met this incredible person.’

Pressed on how a marriage could truly exist without conflict, Clooney explained that perspective, not perfection, is what keeps the peace.

‘I’m in a much different place in life. I’m much more secure, and I am also less in the mood to win arguments. When you’re young, you’re trying to win everything.’

When the interviewer suggested he’s now more willing to concede, Clooney laughed it off.

‘I’m not conceding. But nice try. You’re going to get me in trouble with my wife.’

He went on to share a moment that cemented his willingness to listen when Amal speaks up, even when she voiced disapproval of his motorcycles.

After a terrifying crash, Clooney recalled: ‘I did a head-over-heels. I was going 75 mph and my head shattered his windshield and then I went flipping in the air. You can see it. You can watch it online.’

He added: ‘I landed on my hands and knees. Like you can throw a pencil in the air and how many times does it land on its tip. It’s 100 to 1. I used up all my lives on that one.’

So when Amal told him, ‘I think we’re done,’ Clooney didn’t fight her.

‘I said, “OK. Fair enough.” By the way, there isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t miss it,’ he admitted, before comparing it to encouraging Amal to quit smoking.

‘You know, my wife used to smoke, and I said, “I think it’s time you quit.” And I’m sure there isn’t a day that goes by where she doesn’t miss smoking a cigarette. But I’m really glad she stopped ,’ he added.

Clooney also revealed how deeply self-reflective he’s become with age, crediting his late father for keeping him grounded.

‘I’m constantly trying to keep tabs on who I am as a person and hold myself to the standard that my father holds me to. I come up short. I do have that voice from my old man going, ‘Don’t come back and look me in the eye until you do this.’

The actor echoed those sentiments just last month while appearing on the New Heights podcast, where host Travis Kelce questioned whether Clooney was exaggerating his no-fights claim.

‘You claim you and your wife haven’t gotten in a fight in 10 years.. are you lying?’ Kelce asked.

Clooney shot back: ‘No I’m not lying! Should we ask you the same question?’

Kelce, who is engaged to Taylor Swift, insisted he was also argument-free, prompting Clooney to spell out his philosophy.

‘Honestly, obviously neither of us are going to win the argument, so why get in it?’ he mused.

Kelce’s brother Jason Kelce called it wisdom, as Clooney concluded: ‘Dude, I’m 64 years old, what am I going to argue about at this point?’

Clooney, then, concluded: ‘You know, I met this incredible woman who’s beautiful and smart and stands for all the important things that I believe in. I can’t believe how lucky I am, so what am I going to fight about?’
