Mariah Carey returns to Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve stage nine years after THAT notorious performance

Mariah Carey braved the New Year’s Rockin’ Eve stage on Wednesday evening, nine years after suffering a lip-sync gaffe.

The 56-year-old singer — who just turned heads in Aspen — wore a low-cut, stone-covered, ombre pink mini dress and thigh-high metallic silver boots.

She performed her 2009 hit song Obsessed, this time singing live for the excited Times Square audience. 

Carey’s signature waist-length blond locks were parted down the middle and styled in spirals that fell over her chest. 

The renowned vocalist clutched a metallic gold microphone during the high-profile appearance to ring in 2026.

Nearly a decade ago technical problems left her off beat with her lip syncing track, resulting in her storming off stage.

Several years ago the pop star was supposed to herald in 2017 and say bye to 2016 before the traditional ball drop by performing her songs Emotions and We Belong Together.

However, she struggled to hear her backing music and eventually stopped pretending to sing.

She placed a hand on her hip while her previously recorded vocal track continued to play without her.

Visibly upset by the blunder taking place in real time with millions watching, Carey began pacing in frustration across the stage.

Despite the tech issues, she told the crowd: ‘I’m trying to be a good sport here.’

Her backup dancers continued their routine, but became confused, leading the songstress to say, ‘It is what it is. It just don’t get any better,’ before walking off the stage.

Afterward she brushed off the disaster, writing ‘s*** happens’ in an Instagram post.

She cheekily added, ‘Have a happy and healthy new year, everybody. Here’s to making more headlines in 2017.’ 

It was an unfortunate end to the year, which also saw her engagement to Australian billionaire James Packer end.

The star announced in mid December that she will open the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy in February.

The lifelong vocalist, who will reportedly release a 90s grunge album next year, shared the news in a video posted on Instagram.

Clad in a tight, plunging red dress and diamond necklace, she said, ‘Ciao! Get ready for Milano Cortina 2026.’

Sprinkling in bits of Italian, she continued, ‘See you at the Stadio San Siro on the 6th of February for the Olympic Opening Ceremony. Ci Vediamo a Milano!​’

She echoed the closing phrase in her caption, which translates to ‘See you in Milan.’

The Milano Cortina Instagram account shared a promotional poster for the event and referenced Carey’s famed Christmas song All I Want for Christmas Is You in the caption, writing, ‘All I want for THE OPENING CEREMONY​ is youuuuuuuu!​’
