Awkward moment as New Year’s Eve reveller drops F-bomb on Sunrise: ‘I did not see that coming’

Sunrise viewers woke up to quite a shock on Thursday as one New Year’s Eve reveller dropped an F-bomb live on air.

Intrepid reporter Katie Brown was on Bondi Beach in the wake of Wednesday night’s end-of-year festivities chatting to some ‘stragglers’ from the night before.

‘We definitely have people who have started their new year with a swim – I think it’s also possibly to help their sore heads,’ Katie said.

Addressing a small crowd, Katie asked: ‘Who here is still on? Anyone been home yet?’

One man in the crowd eagerly pointed his fingers in the air, signalling that he was still very much imbued with the party spirit.

As Katie put on a pair of star-shaped glasses in an attempt to keep the festivities going, Sunrise host David Woiwod wanted to know more about the finger-pointing partygoer.

‘Hey Katie, there’s a bloke there in a white collared shirt… I want to know about him. Has he pushed through?’ David asked.

Katie replied: ‘He’s from Brazil, and you haven’t slept yet, have you?’

The man, though looking rather the worse for wear, was visibly excited to be on television before demonstrating just how unpredictable live broadcasts can be.

‘I have not, and I f***ing love…’ he said before being quickly cut off by Katie.

‘Remember when we said no?’ Katie asked the man, who sheepishly continued with: ‘I love it, I love it.’

David accepted responsibility for the mishap, while co-host Edwina Bartholomew expressed her astonishment.

‘I did not see that coming. That will get you waking up,’ she said before chastising David for his role in the sweary exchange.

‘Talk to the drunk guy who hasn’t gone home,’ she said.

David replied: ‘I didn’t realise he was from Brazil. Leave him alone.’

The man was one of more than a million people who flocked to Sydney Harbour and surrounds on Wednesday to say goodbye to 2025.

All eyes were on the iconic Sydney waterfront where the crowd held their phone torch lights aloft while a menorah was projected onto the Harbour Bridge’s pylons and a dove along with the words ‘peace’ and ‘unity’ were displayed.

The tribute to victims of the Bondi attack contrasted with the brilliant firework display that rang out across the world-famous harbour at midnight.

There was a heavy security presence throughout the festivities, with thousands of armed police in attendance to safeguard the crowds.

Meanwhile, many people ringing in the new year at home were left disappointed by the ABC’s coverage of festivities.

The government-funded broadcaster rolled out a series of heritage acts to take the stage for the concert portion of the telecast.

Kicking off the festivities was 2000s band The Cat Empire, with Casey Donovan and Peach PRC performing, while Spice Girls star Mel C headlined the celebration.

But it was the decision to feature the stars of children’s program Play School performing a medley of kids’ tracks for the show’s 60th anniversary – including Wiggle Wiggly Woo and the show’s jaunty theme song – close to 10pm that sparked the most ire.

‘It’s 9.45pm – why on earth is Play School on #ABCNYE – it’s so bizarre. The kiddies are already in bed!’ wrote one person on X.

Another said: ‘Okay enough is enough. We’re switching this crap off. Pity to miss Casey but I can’t take this crap anymore.’
