This year the entertainment industry has said a heartfelt goodbye to stars on and off the screen.

In July, the music world was rocked following the passing of icon Ozzy Osbourne, who died just weeks after his final ever Black Sabbath concert.

The ‘Queen of the bonkbuster’ author, Dame Jilly Cooper, famed for her raunchy romance novels, sold more than 12million books in her career.

On the small screen, fans of Keeping Up Appearances were left bereft by  Dame Patricia Routledge’s passing aged 96.

And just days before Christmas, Chris Rea – the music legend famed for composing and singing Driving Home For Christmas – died suddenly at 74.

‘The nature of the call was for a cardiac arrest. A 71-year-old resident, Terry Bollea, also known as Hulk Hogan, was treated by Clearwater Fire & Rescue crews before being taken by Sunstar to Morton Plant Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.’

Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer were found dead in their Los Angeles home in December, in what police are investigating as a double homicide.

Their bodies were cremated, and their remains were released to their eldest son, Jake, according to reports.

The couple’s 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, was arrested on the same day and charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

David’s death was announced in January of this year at the age of 78. 

Famous for directing his iconic TV series and the film Blue Velvet, Lynch had been battling ill health and was homebound due to emphysema. 

In a post, shared on Facebook, his loved ones wrote: ‘It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch.’

The couple, who had been married since 1991, were found in separate bedrooms as well as one of their dogs of their Santa Fe abode.  

Hackman tested negative for Hantavirus – the rat-borne disease which killed his wife, Betsy Arakawa.

Police have since determined that Arakawa died first around February 12 as a result of respiratory symptoms caused by the rare but deadly virus, which is passed on through rodent urine, saliva and feces. She was 65. 

Hackman, who was suffering from advanced Alzheimer’s disease at the time, is believed to have wandered around the couple’s home alone after his wife’s death.

Due to the advanced condition, he may not have ever realized his wife had died.

The actress passed away ‘peacefully’ in her London care home surrounded by relatives, her family said, having endured the disease for several years. 

Pauline was married to actor John Alderton, 84, who she frequently appeared on stage and screen with, and who led the tributes to the star alongside Dame Joanna Lumley. 

In a statement released, her family said: ‘Pauline was so many things to so many people, playing a variety of roles in her life. 

‘A bright, sparky, witty presence on stage and screen. Her illustrious career saw her play politicians, mothers and queens.

‘She will always be remembered as the iconic, strong-willed, vivacious and wise Shirley Valentine – a role that she made all her own. 

‘We were familiar with all those parts of her because her magic was contained in each one of them.

‘More than anything, though, she was our loving mum, our wonderful grandma and great-grandma. Warm, funny, generous, thoughtful, wise, she was always there for us. And she was John’s life-long love. A partner, work collaborator, and wife of 56 years.

‘We particularly want to thank her carers: angels who looked after her with dignity, compassion, and most of all love. She could not have had a more peaceful goodbye.

Reggae legend and actor Jimmy Cliff died aged 81 on November 24.

The star was best known for songs such as Many Rivers to Cross and You Can get It If You Really Want – and for recording an officially sanctioned cover version of Hakuna Matata, from Disney’s The Lion King.

Cliff, who won Grammy awards for albums Cliff Hanger and Rebirth, also built a career as an actor. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

His wife Latifa Chambers confirmed his passing on social media.

She wrote: ‘It’s with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia.

‘I am thankful for his family, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who have shared his journey with him.

To all his fans around the world, please know that your support was his strength throughout his whole career. He really appreciated each and every fan for their love.

‘Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.’

‘She died peacefully, with her final days filled with her true loves: family and music and warmth and Christmas and joy.

‘We can’t imagine what life will be like without her radiance and love of life.

‘Despite her illness, which she bore with unimaginable courage, Sophie counted herself truly blessed – to have such wonderful family and friends, and to have had the extraordinary success of her writing career.

He died peacefully at his home in Dorset surrounded by his family, his agency announced.

His contribution to the dramatic arts won him a host of Tony and Olivier awards, as well as a Golden Globe and an Academy Award with Marc Norman for their 1998 screenplay Shakespeare In Love – starring fellow Oscar-winner Gwyneth Paltrow. 

The legendary writer’s other stage work included The Real Thing, and Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead.  

Announcing his death, United Agents said: ‘We are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved client and friend, Tom Stoppard, has died peacefully at home in Dorset, surrounded by his family.

‘He will be remembered for his works, for their brilliance and humanity, and for his wit, his irreverence, his generosity of spirit and his profound love of the English language. It was an honour to work with Tom and to know him.’

KISS legend Ace Frehley died at the age of 74 on October 16 in Morristown, New Jersey, after suffering a devastating brain bleed that left him on life support.

After being hospitalised and placed on a ventilator, the iconic musician passed away when his family made the difficult decision to turn off life support, per TMZ. 

The musician reportedly collapsed in his home studio a few weeks prior, hitting his head in a frightening fall that triggered the medical crisis, per the outlet.

Their rep Lori Lousararian told Rolling Stone that the musician’s health deteriorated following a ‘recent fall at his home,’ though details beyond that were not immediately clear.

Frehley’s family issued a statement obtained by Rolling Stone saying they ‘are completely devastated and heartbroken’ by his passing, but relieved they were able to provide him with comfortable conditions at the end.

Steve Cropper, the guitarist and songwriter who helped anchor the celebrated Memphis backing band Booker T. and the MG’s at Stax Records and co-wrote the classics Green Onions, (Sittin’ on) the Dock of the Bay and In the Midnight Hour, died. He was 84.

Pat Mitchell Worley, president and CEO of the Soulsville Foundation, said Cropper´s family told her that Cropper died on December 3 in Nashville.

The foundation operates the Stax Museum of American Soul Music in Memphis, located at the site of the former Stax Records, where Cropper worked for years.

A cause of death was not immediately known. Longtime associate Eddie Gore said he was with Cropper on a day before at a rehabilitation facility in Nashville, where Cropper had been after a recent fall. Cropper had been working on new music when Gore visited, he said.

‘He’s such a good human,’ Gore said. ‘We were blessed to have him, for sure.’

Julian McMahon – who starred in Nip/Tuck and FBI: Most Wanted – has passed away at 56 after a private health battle on July 2.

The 56-year-old Australian-American actor had been secretly battling cancer, his wife Kelly revealed in a heartbreaking statement.

His wife said : ‘With an open heart, I wish to share with the world that my beloved husband, Julian McMahon, died peacefully this week after a valiant effort to overcome cancer.’

Singer and actress Marianne Faithfull has died at the age of 78, her spokesperson has said.

She became well known for her hits including As Tears Go By, which was written by The Rolling Stones’ Sir Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.

The statement from her spokesperson read: ‘It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull.

‘Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family. She will be dearly missed.’
