Mel C teases a Spice Girls reunion as she headlines New Year’s Eve concert in Sydney

Former Spice Girl Mel C has teased that a long-awaited reunion of the beloved Britpop girl group is underway.

The 51-year-old made the comments in an interview ahead of her New Year’s Eve performance on the Sydney Harbour foreshore on Thursday.

Mel – real name Melanie Chisholm – said she was ‘really proud’ of being a Spice Girl and the group’s legacy, which includes a staggering nine number one in the UK.

Speaking to Zan Rowe during the ABC’s NYE coverage, Mel was asked about the Spice Girls’ 30th anniversary in 2026.

‘I feel really proud of everything that we did,’ she gushed and continued:

‘[And of] the legacy that we created – and we find young people all the time discovering the Spice Girls. It’s a wonderful thing – I’m so proud to be a Spice Girl and it would be lovely to celebrate that in some way.’

Meanwhile, Mel C said that fans could look forward to a NYE performance that was ‘spicy’, hinting that her set under the sails of the Sydney Opera House would include classics from the girl group.

Elsewhere in the chat, Mel C said she was ‘honoured’ to help usher in the New Year Down Under.

‘I can’t think of anywhere better to be,’ she said, adding she would ‘pull out all stops’ for her show.

‘It’s an honour, it really, really is and being British, we are just so aware of how you guys celebrate. You are one of the first places to welcome in the New Year [around the world].’

It comes after Mel C appeared on Good Morning America last month to promote her upcoming ninth album Sweat.

During her appearance, she was asked about a Spice Girls comeback.

Crossing her fingers, Mel said: ‘I remain optimistic. It’s our thirtieth anniversary next year.

‘We toured in 2019, we did a few stadium shows in the UK, and it was incredible.

‘We’re just so proud of the legacy that we have, and we have fans now from new generations who are just loving the Spice Girls, so I would like to get back on stage with the girls.

‘We’re talking, and we’re seeing what opportunities are out there. The thing that stops us is we feel so precious about it, we want to make sure it’s the right thing and agree on the right thing.’

After forming in 1994, the Spice Girls first hit the charts in 1996 with the single Wannabe, which became a global smash hit.

Other chart toppers followed, including Say You’ll Be There, Spice Up Your Life, and Who Do You Think You Are.

Meanwhile, all five bandmates attended Victoria’s 50th birthday last year as they celebrated the milestone birthday together.

During the lavish festivities, all five of the Spice Girls came together to sing one of their hit tracks, Stop, for the star-studded guests – which was all caught on camera by David Beckham.
