Liam Gallagher Apologizes for Racial Slur Tweet Amid Backlash from Fans Before Oasis Reunion

Liam Gallagher has issued a public apology to fans after sparking outrage for tweeting a racial slur.

The singer, 52, is only days away from the start of the long-awaited Oasis reunion tour, with him set to take the stage with brother Noel, 58, for the first time in 15 years, on Friday in Cardiff.

However, the famously outspoken and controversial star left many of his Asian fans hurt and offended, after tweeting out the derogatory phrase ‘chingchong’.

The slur is a derogatory imitation of the Chinese language and is used mock or denigrate people of East Asian descent.

In the past both Shaquille O’Neal and Rosie O’Donnell have drawn public ire and issued apologies for using the offensive term.

Liam appeared to tweet the phrase on Tuesday, responding to critics by claiming: ‘it’s an ancient thought process get on it’, and responding to one fan warning him he’d be cancelled by saying: ‘Whatever’.

But he seemed to have learned the error of his ways by Wednesday, after deleting the original tweet and taking to X once again to apologise and insist his use of the slur wasn’t ‘intentional’.

He wrote: ‘Sorry if I offended anyone with my tweet before it wasn’t intentional you know I love you all and I do not discriminate. peace and love LG x’.

However, the damage was done for many, with some less than impressed by his apology and calling his behaviour ‘disappointing’.

They took to social media to say: ‘My friend once went to Liam Gallagher’s Knebworth gig alone, and got assaulted by racists. It was never just a wrong word. It sounds okay to you because you’ve never been scared by people calling you racist slurs. Grown ups should know it’s never right to defend racism’.

‘why are so many white people defending Liam Gallagher and saying he did nothing wrong?? Just because he sang your favourite songs doesn’t mean you can excuse blatant racism.’

But he seemed to have learned the error of his ways by Wednesday, after deleting the original tweet and taking to X once again to apologise and insist his use of the slur wasn’t ‘intentional’

‘It’s fine that Liam apologized because it’s the least the offended Chinese fans deserve, but if you’re not Asian you shouldn’t tell Liam that there was no mistake on his part, and that his apologies aren’t necessary, YES they are necessary’.

‘I personally don’t care for his half-hearted apologies. He clearly doesn’t care when his only responses to people calling him out on his previous remarks were “whatever”. That really says it all.’

‘Those white people who forgive Liam Gallagher for tweeting “chingchong” certainly haven’t been called by this racist, derogatory, disgusting name on the streets, multiple times, unprovoked, just for looking East Asian.’

‘he was saying whatever in the replies yesterday but ig being scrubbed from a burberry campaign will do wonders for one’s solemnity and reflection’.

‘i appreciate the apology but the original tweet and the dismissiveness in his replies to ppl rightfully critiquing him still leave a bad taste hopefully he learns from this but it’s just truly disappointing’.

It comes as Oasis have arrived in Cardiff ahead of the first gig of their hotly-anticipated reunion tour, after a last minute change to the plans.

The iconic Britpop band will perform stadium shows for the first time in 15 years across the United Kingdom, Ireland, Japan, South Korea and North, Central and South America, where it will conclude with a show at São Paulo’s Estádio do Morumbi on November 23.

And on Monday, fans became convinced that the duo had already arrived in Wales to sound check at the stadium after people heard music coming from inside.

It has also been revealed the brothers have enlisted new bandmates for the tour, with drummer Joey Waronker and guitarists Andy Bell, Gem Archer and Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthurs on board.

A source told The Mirror: ‘With a new lineup and it being such a huge first show, the boys will do some songs inside the venue too.

‘Some tours would start with a smaller show or take a week or two to get into the groove again- but there is no time for that, and also Liam and Noel want every night to be massive.

‘This is such a huge comeback show, and they are taking it very seriously, it all points to it being an incredible comeback tour.’
