Sophie Ellis-Bextor says she has no rules in her house and reveals her eldest son lives with his grandmother, 70, as she opens up on parenting her five children

Sophie Ellis-Bextor has revealed she doesn’t have rules in her house as she opened up on parenting five children.

The Murder On The Dancefloor singer, 46, shares five children Sonny, 21, Kit, 14, Ray, 11, Jesse, seven, and Mickey, four, with her husband Richard Jones.

In a new interview, Sophie has said she has ‘too many’ children to have rules – while revealing her eldest son lives with his grandmother.

She explained: ‘I’m a communicator. I often ask them, ‘What would you do if you were the parent in this situation?’ We’re big on talking about stuff – we don’t have fixed rules about anything.’

Despite this, Sophie said her children ‘self-regulate’ while adding: ‘I have boundaries. I want all of us to have a moral compass. Kindness is a big thing. Also freedom. The world is all about what you dial up and what to dial down – there’s a lot going on for the boys with schools and exams.

‘I want home to be a place where they can feel good, safe and supported by their siblings. So I’m quite firm around the edges of all that because I really value it.

‘But I’ve had too many children to be a strict parent – I’ve realised that is not a value of mine.’

When it comes to Sonny, 21, he has moved in with his grandmother who lives close by – something which Sophie encouraged.

She explained to The Telegraph how they have ‘always been so close’ and she lived on her own before Sonny moved in.

Sophie’s parenting revelation comes after she admitted earlier this year that her youngest children are being picked on for their red hair as they aren’t ‘blending in’ with their classmates.

She told Andreas Wild on her Salon Confidential podcast: ‘It’s [bullying] definitely been something they’ve experienced, which is really harsh.

‘You get to secondary school and anything that marks you out becomes the thing you will be teased about.

‘It’s extraordinary how you have this desire at that age group just to blend in, to be part of the pack. It’s a really strong instinct.

‘But rather than letting it make you feel down, hopefully by having conversations, you can actually keep an eye on it and keep it on the right side of things.’

She added: ‘And then you get a bit older and you’re like “Actually, all those things about me that set me apart are the things I’ll now give space to and invest in and enjoy myself”.

‘My kids have got some different shades of red, but it’s so gorgeous – and I can always find them so easily in a playground.’

Sophie was recently praised by fans as she hilariously mocked influencers’ extreme morning routines in a TikTok video on Monday.

In recent months, influencers have gone viral for documenting their outrageous daily timestamps, starting their day before 4am.

Some routines consisted of dipping their faces in ice cold water, sleeping with mouth tape and exercising before sunrise.

She poked fun at some of the shocking routines she has come across on her social media.

She captioned her post: ‘I’ve been up for hours.. what about you? #morningroutine’
