Five years before Charlotte Stewart starred in Little House on the Prairie, she was a free-spirited hippie who owned a clothing shop called Liquid Butterfly where she met The Doors frontman Jim Morrison.
‘We would go out for drinks. He was quite a drinker, and often he needed to be driven home. So I would take him to my house because he trusted me,’ the 84-year-old retired actress told Fox News Digital last week.
‘I didn’t want him to be my boyfriend. I didn’t want to marry him. All I wanted was to be his friend. He drank like I drank at that time. So we became trusted friends. He could count on me.’
After Morrison allegedly exposed his genitalia at a 1969 Miami concert, he was issued six warrants on obscenity charges and returned to California where he visited Stewart.
‘He came up to me and said, “I gotta get out of town. You want to go?” I said, “Sure,”‘ the NoCal native recalled.
‘We jumped in the car, and he didn’t know where he wanted to go, so I directed him up Highway 1, which follows the Pacific Ocean all the way to Washington and Oregon. We just drove — stopping at bars along the way and staying overnight at motels.’

Stewart spent four days on the coast with ‘The Lizard King,’ even shooting the road trip on Super 8 film.
‘Most of it was just him driving, which wasn’t very interesting,’ the Beadle Bag designer said of her footage.
‘I took him to Hearst Castle. There are pictures of me eating a hot dog there. We stayed with a lot of friends I had up there. They didn’t even know who he was because, at the time, he had a full beard and really didn’t take care of it.
‘He looked like a bum. But I introduced him to my friends, and they didn’t have a clue it was Jim Morrison.’
Stewart continued: ‘The fact that he trusted me at the worst time in his life when he was facing jail time — I will always cherish that. He knew he was going to have to fly back to Florida and face trial. And then he was gone.’
Morrison was put on trial in 1970 where he was convicted of two misdemeanors (indecent exposure and open profanity) and Circuit Judge Murray Goodman sentenced him to six months in prison and a $500 fine.
However, the Florida-born poet remained free on a $50,000 bond while the verdict was being appealed and he passed away, at age 27, in 1971 from heart failure (rumored heroin overdose) in Paris before ever going behind bars.
‘I was heartbroken,’ admitted the Twin Peaks alum.
‘[Romance] had nothing to do with it…He trusted me because I didn’t want anything from him. I was just being a friend — happened to be a friend with benefits. That’s what we did.’

On the 67th anniversary of Morrison’s birth, Florida governor Charlie Crist and the state clemency board unanimously issued a posthumous pardon for the legendary rocker.
