The Bachelor’s Laura Byrne and Matty J are slammed for ‘ugly bathroom’ renovation: ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on acid’

The Bachelor’s Matty J and Laura Byrne have updated followers on their $2.2million beach house renovation.

The former reality TV stars, who snapped up the ‘rundown’ property on the NSW south coast last August, took to social media over the weekend with a ‘bathroom reveal’.

But the pair’s daring style choices have polarised followers with some fans praising their work while others were quick to pan it as ‘too much’.

A ‘before’ and ‘after’ Instagram video shows how the couple transformed the old bathroom’s dated look into a luxury suite with vertical pattern wall tiling.

The new bathroom also features a black and white marbled basin and antique brass fittings.

But the striking combination stirred armchair critics to slam the look as ‘too busy,’ with one follower commenting, ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on acid.’

Many of Matty and Laura’s fans appeared to object to the choice of using the marble.

‘I love you guys but I hate this. Sorry just hurts my eyes,’ messaged another.

‘Ekkk sorry but way too much going on. Seems all over the place and doesn’t match but as long as you guys love it!’ commented one more.

Still, the new bathroom had a lot of fans who filled Matty and Laura’s comment box with positive comments.

‘Went straight to the comments after the video knowing you’re unique style was gonna rustle all those beige/neutral feathers,’ said one follower.

‘So beautiful, I love it so much! Very ‘you’ f*** the Karens,’ added another.

‘Absolutely love it! Clashing patterns with the marble and stripe tiles is right up my alley, the wide stripe means it’s not super duper busy. So glad you did what you love!,’ wrote one more.

it comes after Matty and Laura announced in December that they had hit a huge roadblock as they commenced their extensive reno.

In a post shared to Instagram podcaster Laura detailed the many issues they have faced since they started overhauling the home from termites to wood rot and mould.

She posted a behind-the-scenes video showing how they had stripped the rundown property to its bare bones and revealed the shocking discoveries they found.

‘We’ve been met with termites, white ants, wood rot, mould and more than a couple of snakes along the way – but finally she is taking shape and we are slowly seeing the light at the end of the tunnel,’ she shared.

Located on a clifftop in Ulladulla on the far south coast of NSW 226kms from Sydney, the old two-storey dwelling offers amazing water views and has been dubbed by the couple the Chante-Mer – which means ‘Sing the Sea’ in French.

The home last changed hands in 1984 for a mere $62,500 and Laura and Matty splashed out $2.19million on buying it last August.

The location holds special meaning for the pair, who tied the knot in 2022 at Cupitts Estate Winery, just down the road from their new holiday home.

The reality television stars currently live in a four-bedroom semi in North Bondi, which they purchased for $5.2million in 2023.

They also boast a stunning $1.8million holiday home in Bangalow, near Byron Bay.

After getting engaged in Fiji in April 2018, Laura and Matty finally tied the knot on the south coast in November 2022, five years after meeting on The Bachelor.

They are one of the most successful couples to come out of the show and welcomed their daughter Marlie-Mae in 2019, followed by Lola in February 2021.
