Social media superstar Molly-Mae Hague’s launch day for her new clothing brand had been in the diary for weeks.
Her lavish two-floored suite at London’s Corinthia Hotel, decorated by bouquets of white roses, was filled with examples from her Maebe collection ready for invited guests to inspect.
But, as it transpired, there was a far bigger story at play casting an unwanted shadow over her big unveiling.
In the weeks leading up to the launch in September, Molly split from her fiancé Tommy Fury, the father of her two-year-old daughter Bambi, after he allegedly cheated.
The legions of fans who watched their romance unfold on ITV2 dating series Love Island during the show’s peak season in 2019, were left in utter shock, myself included.
After all, in an internet-era, Molly and Tommy, both 25, are on the same fame level as David and Victoria Beckham.
So, as a journalist, upon receiving the incredibly rare opportunity to interview Molly for said launch, I couldn’t exactly not quiz the former Islander about the question on everybody’s lips… her relationship status.
My interview with Molly is played out in her new Prime Video series Molly-Mae: Behind It All, which is available to stream now.

Molly-Mae Hague invited MailOnline to view her new clothing collection amid her split from Tommy Fury

The influencer welcomed Chief Showbiz Reporter Sarah Packer into her two-floored suite at London’s Corinthia Hotel where she filmed her new Prime Video series Molly-Mae: Behind It All

MailOnline went behind the scenes of the star’s new documentary, which follows her life post breakup from Tommy
Originally meant to be a show about Molly and Tommy during the build-up to their wedding this year, the split changed the narrative, with Amazon siding with the influencer, rather than the boxer, to make the documentary solely about her. She was the star they wanted.
And given the timing of the split, and the fact they’re now seemingly back together after being filmed sharing a passionate kiss at a New Year’s Eve party just as the series was about to air, conspiracy theorists believe the breakup was just one big publicity stunt…
But having met Molly that day, I can wholeheartedly say the breakup was genuine –and it had even empowered her.
Walking into her suite at the Corinthia felt like I was stepping into her world.
She greeted me with a warm embrace while dressed in a casual white T-shirt, tailored grey trousers, oversized glasses and gold hooped earrings.
I was introduced to a member of the filming team in the hotel reception who explained that we wouldn’t be doing multiple takes, the filming is entirely natural, the cameras have been following Molly’s every move, and she hasn’t been reshooting.
I was wired up and then came into the suite where myself and Molly spoke about the last time we saw each other, which was in New York when supermodel Naomi Campbell launched a clothing range with PrettyLittleThing.
I had met Molly before the trip to the US, when she put her name to the launch of a fake eyelash brand shortly after her stint on Love Island.

Molly was joined by daughter Bambi at the end of the interview, cradling the two-year-old in her arms when she came running into the suite

The star’s longstanding manager Francesca was keen for Molly to avoid answering questions about her love life

This week, the reasons behind Molly and Tommy’s breakup became clear as the boxer admitted to having issues with alcohol
But since then, she’s hit the big time, as her 8.3million Instagram followers testifies, and it’s become very difficult to obtain interview time with her because of how fearful she is of the press and being probed about her private life…
But MailOnline were given an exclusive insight into her Maebe launch and she, along with her manager Francesca Britton-Lynch, had a strategy in place to deal with ‘non-fashion’ questions, as viewers can see from the scene we filmed together.
Before I walked into the suite, Fran warned: ‘I don’t want her to approach you at all about anything that’s gone on’ before Molly quipped: ‘I won’t even entertain it… I’ll say, nice try Sarah… not today, love.’
You could tell Molly was carrying a lot on her shoulders, the launch of her first clothing brand, parenting daughter Bambi, who joined us at the end of the interview, and now the breakup, which was headline news and continues to enthral our readers today.
When I asked her how she was coping, she remained guarded, but expressed how she was using the split to finally come out of her shell by saying ‘yes’ to projects and pushing forward with new opportunities.
She felt like it was a new era for her and at that time she definitely did not plan on getting back together with Tommy.
Molly told me: ‘I have a really good feeling about this new era of my life and think it’s going to be so special and a great thing for me to focus on and put my time into as well as being a mum to Bambi…
‘I have grown up and it’s given me the chance to be focused and driven. I have more confidence now to say how I feel. I am in my yes era.’
But you could tell there was sadness underneath all the bravado.
This week, Tommy confessed to being alcohol dependent after suffering from a boxing injury but in Behind It All, his issues with drinking and how that impacted his relationship with Molly are discussed on a deeper level.

Molly sobbed talking to her mother over fears of history repeating itself after Debbie used alcohol as a way of coping with divorce following the end of her 25-year marriage to husband Stephen.
The influencer said: ‘I never, ever wanted to be with someone that drank because my mum had a period of time in her life where she struggled with alcohol because her marriage of 25-years had just ended, and she turned to drink probably more than she should have.
‘I was only about 14/15 when that happened, and I saw my mum in some states going through a really vulnerable time so I have never, ever been around it in a positive light.’
Delving into the real reasons behind their separation, Molly recalled begging Tommy not to drink alcohol at her sister Zoe’s wedding last year and how she was ultimately betrayed by him going against her wishes.
She explained: ‘At my sister’s wedding I literally pleaded with Tommy, I begged him to not drink and it just… It’s just really sad, I don’t know why I’m crying now. It affected me, that’s why my relationship with alcohol is so damaged.’
As those who know her best will acknowledge, all Molly ever wanted was to marry Tommy. Behind all the flawless Instagram posts, Birkin bags, and clean girl aesthetic, she’s a real homebody.
Her main passions are caring for Bambi, her pristine Cheshire property, and having a healthy relationship, they’re the things that she cares most about, harbouring a close knit family like the one she grew up in.
She definitely does not need Tommy for financial reasons or to boost her brand, which she fiercely protects.
Molly owns her home, which is often featured on her YouTube channel, and is offered that many job opportunities – she told me she only takes on one per cent of gigs presented to her because brands are desperate to feature on her Instagram profile.
The only reason she would take Tommy back is for the sake of their young daughter and because she truly loves him.
She longed for them to live happily ever after and even welcome a second child together.
Towards the end of our interview, where Molly proudly showed off the items from her first collection with Maebe, Bambi came running into the suite, her blonde hair in little buns, screaming ‘mummy, mummy!’ and suddenly she went from business owner conducting a press interview to a mother, showing a completely different side to her.
Sweeping Bambi up in her arms and smothering her with kisses, she was truly in absolute awe of her little bundle of joy.
And seeing this young mother bossing it first-hand, not only in parenting, but also in business, was impressive viewing and she’s only going to get more successful as Behind It All airs – with or without Tommy.
