Brooke Shields got candid about the challenges she has raising her daughters Grier, 18, and Rowan, 21, in today’s culture.
While posing for a cover story with Real Simple on Tuesday, the 59-year-old actress said she is teacher her daughters to embrace aging by flipping the narrative on Hollywood’s beauty standards.
‘I look at my two girls — everything’s higher and tighter and smoother. And I know it’s all appealing and it does sell. But, I want my girls not to be terrified to be my age,’ she told the outlet.
‘Our society has become so myopically focused on youth, we lose sight of the value that comes with age and experience and time.’
Later in the interview, The Blue Lagoon star shared that she teaches her young-adult daughters about the ever-changing definition of beauty, proclaiming that the current culture is ‘ridiculous.’
‘I don’t shy away from telling them they’re beautiful, because they are, in my eyes as a mother! So I’m allowed that; it’s my prerogative. But it has to have a caveat,’ she said.

She continued: ‘I tell them that beauty means different things to different people and different cultures. And it’s not all you are. It is a piece and part of your individuality.
‘Of course, we have a culture which homogenizes. Defines. I was called the face of a decade. Who the hell decides that? A particular face gets stamped with this? Whatever it is, it’s ridiculous.’
The iconic actress shares Grier — who showed interest in becoming a model back in August — and Rowan with her husband of nearly 24-years Chris Henchy.
The New York native revealed she made it clear to her youngest that she does not ‘know the industry now’ and shared the tough advice she gave her.
She told Grier: ‘I’m not going to be your manager. I don’t know the industry now. You want to walk in shows; I never walked in shows. I do know stuff and I do have history and I do have opinions.
‘You can’t just want to be famous, and it can’t just be to make money. It has to come from a deeper place because it’s not fun. It’s hard and it’s thankless.’
And Brooke firmly said she would not be either of her daughter’s managers if they do decide to make a name for themselves in the entertainment industry, instead suggesting they find an agent.
As a college freshman, Grier previously admitted that having a famous mum has gotten her ‘into rooms’ but the connection does not guarantee casting directors will ‘ask me to come back.’

She added: ‘Having a famous mom can only get you so far. If I sucked at my job, I’d be fired. If Rowan sucked at her job, she’d be fired. You have to be good at what you’re doing to keep the job.’
The 21-year-old college senior spent last summer interning at Good Morning America.
Rowan chimed in, ‘I work as an intern and I’m constantly asking “What do you need?” It would be a waste if I went about my life and didn’t use [Brooke] a little bit.
The Mother of the Bride actress explained that letting her daughters navigate their own careers ‘makes them work harder.’
She said, ‘I will say to Grier, it’s going to be uncomfortable, you’re going to be tired. There’s going to be dismissiveness or discomfort in what you’re wearing and that’s just the way it goes. You arrive early and leave after everybody and that means something.’
