Jenna Bush Hager’s Parenting Fail

Jenna Bush Hager has revealed she suffered an epic parenting fail with her eldest child, Mila, when she tried to surprise her for her birthday.

During Wednesday’s episode of Today with Hoda & Jenna, the 42-year-old was discussing the topic of surprises with stand-in cohost Donna Farizan when she admitted that she left her daughter, now 11, mortified a few years ago when she organized a ‘drive-by party’ for her.

Referring to the year 2020, Jenna, who once revealed her kids refuse to call her ‘mom,’ said: ‘I tried during COVID… remember when those drive-by parties were popular? I tried to do one for Mila because her birthday was in April, right after the world shut down.

‘So, we had our friends, and her friends drive with signs,’ she continued, before admitting: ‘Yeah, she was not happy. She leaned on me and she was like: “Why would you do this? Why would you do this?” I was like “I thought you would like it.”

‘But it was a good realization in parenting that what you would like, is not necessarily what your kids like,’ Jenna added, before going on to recall a birthday surprise her mom, Laura, once organized for her and her twin sister, Barbara.

‘When I was 16, my parents had a pancake breakfast for our 16th birthday,’ Jenna reminisced. ‘So Barbara and I walked down, we were off to school and my mom was like, “Go say goodbye to dad, he has a breakfast.”

‘So I thought we were gonna walk in there and he had some sort of work breakfast [but] we walked down the stairs and all of our friends were there,’ she smiled, before describing the surprise as ‘sweet.’

Donna replied: ‘It’s also hard because they have to surprise two people, not just one,’ referring to Jenna’s twin sibling, who recently welcomed her second child.

Mother-of-three Jenna agreed and commented: ‘Yeah I know, surprising two people isn’t easy!’

Her comments come less than a week after she admitted she’s giving up a ‘numbing’ habit in the hope that it would make her a better parent.

During last Thursday’s episode of Today with Hoda & Jenna, she revealed that she planned to follow in the footsteps of her twin sister, who recently removed Instagram from her cellphone and didn’t miss it at all.

Jenna and her usual cohost, Hoda Kotb, were discussing wellness trends and the art of ‘going with the flow,’ when Jenna opened up about spending too much time on her phone – which she sometimes struggles to navigate.

‘I have to say, this is the thing that I think distracts me, but probably others, from getting in flow…. I bet you can guess it,’ she explained to Hoda, 60, as they both said in unison: ‘Staring down!’

Jenna continued: ‘Staring at your phone. Sometimes when I feel like something’s off, if I really am honest with myself, it’s because I have been spending too much time [on it]…,’ as Hoda replied: ‘I feel like I’ve been doing that lately, actually.’

‘Numbing!’ Jenna said, before adding: ‘So, when I feel like I am off a flow, I take Instagram off my phone. My sister has been off Instagram for… she is still on it, but she took it off the phone.’

The former First Daughter then admitted: ‘This is what I have to do to get off of it… I have to have somebody else change my password because it’s addicting,’ before referring to her sibling once again.

‘So, she gets it off and she goes, “I haven’t had it on my phone and I feel like a present mother, I feel like I have been looking up, walking around, and running into friends, things that make you happy, happen.”

‘And she goes, “and I don’t miss anything, all the things it gave me actually made me feel less joy,” so I’m gonna take it off today!’ Jenna confirmed.
