Based on Greg Koh’s 2008 documentary of the same name, Song Sung Blue tells the true story of a married couple who won hometown fame after forming a band paying tribute to ’70s superstar Neil Diamond.
The biographical musical drama follows down-on-his-luck Milwaukee musician, Mike Sardina, played by Hugh, who teams up with another struggling muso, Claire – played by Kate – to form a Neil Diamond tribute double-act they dub Lightning & Thunder.
The movie follows their journey from struggling Milwaukee performers to finding love and success on stage, navigating personal hurdles, including Mike’s troubled past and a serious accident Claire suffers, all while performing Neil Diamond classics.
Claire was known for her impersonation of famed US country superstar Patsy Cline, while her husband Mike wowed fans with his take on hitmaker Neil.
While never quite making it big outside of their hometown, the duo once played a support spot for famed rockers Pearl Jam.
The film co-stars The Sopranos star Michael Imperioli, Jim Belushi and Succession’s Fisher Stevens and is named after Neilsingle Song Sung Blue which topped the charts in 1972.
Kate and Hugh appeared on The Graham Norton Show on Friday to talk about starring as Mike and Claire, while revealing how Neil had been left in tears after watching the film.
Hugh explained: ‘When you watch it part of you is going to say “Hollywood, take it down a notch, it’s already a good story,” but everything is true. It’s an extraordinary story and they had an unbelievable ride.’
