Controversy Surrounding Michael Jackson Drawings Up for Auction

A collection of drawings claimed to have been sketched by the late Michael Jackson is headed to auction via Kings Auctions, as the estate for the late King of Pop is saying they’re questioning if they’re the genuine article.

An estate rep told TMZ Tuesday that the late Thriller singer’s estate does ‘not accept these sketches as authentic’ after reviewing the items.

The estate rep told the outlet that years back, people affiliated with the estate probed the artwork and felt that the authenticity of the drawings were ‘dubious.’

The rep told TMZ that they have communicated their concerns to Kings Auctions and haven’t been provided with any proof to authenticate the sketches as having been drawn by the late Billie Jean artist.

The collection of images, 76 in total, are being sold August 3 from an undisclosed location in a joint venture from Kings Auctions’ Las Vegas and Beverly Hills offices, according to the outlet.

While there are individual listing for the drawings, Kings Auctions told TMZ that it will accept bids for the entire lot, with a minimum starting bid of $1 million.

If the conditions are not met, the auction house will proceed with selling off the images individually, according to Kings Auctions.

The sketches include subjects such as late personalities such as Marilyn Monroe, Queen Elizabeth II, Andy Warhol, Walt Disney and President George Washington, among others.

Kings Auction told the outlet that they acquired the lot of art following a series of court proceedings as ‘mandated by the Santa Monica Court.’

The drawings had been kept at a private collector’s studio in Santa Monica, California where Kings Auctions reps said Jackson would visit and work on art when he was on the mend from plastic surgeries he’d undergone.

Kings Auctions reps told TMZ that expert Roger Epperson authenticated that the signatures on the sketches were signed by Jackson; and that the sketches aren’t prints.

The outlet noted that a number of Jackson’s belongings were previously auctioned off in the wake of his June 2009 passing, with Kim Kardashian placing the winning bids for a jacket and hat once worn by the Beat It performer.

According to a description from Kings Auctions, ‘Some pieces are double sided and signed by Michael Jackson on both sides’ and ‘each piece comes with a Certificate of Authenticity of signature’ from Epperson.
