ABC veteran Leigh Sales returns to TV after leaving 7.30

TV veteran Leigh Sales is set to make a return to TV in August after leaving the network’s current affairs show 7:30 in 2022.

The 50-year-old will feature in ABC factual series The Assembly which focuses on journalism students who have autism.

Each episode of the six-part series sees the budding broadcasters interview a stellar line up of guests, including Delta Goodrem, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Hollywood legend Sam Neill.

Also guest starring in the series are comedians Amanda Keller and Hamish Blake, as well as AFL legend and former Australian of the Year Adam Goodes.

Known for her probing interviews, Leigh’s role on the show is to help guide and mentor the students as they prepare to interview the cast of big names.

‘This is a chance to work with people who haven’t had a voice in media,’ Leigh explained in the new teaser for the show.

Promising that no subjects are ‘out of bounds’, the guest stars have to negotiate some unusual questions from the student reporters.

At one point in the trailer Hamish Blake is reduced to laughter when he is asked by a student reporter: ‘Are you a really annoying dad?’

In another funny scene shared in the teaser, another student asks PM Anthony Albanese: ‘Who is the meanest prime minister you have ever met?’

The show was produced in partnership Helium Pictures, Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect), Macquarie University, and Bus Stop Films.

Macquarie University was the first Australian university to offer a journalism course for students with autism.

According to the producers, The Assembly was adapted from a format created by French filmmakers Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache, who are best known for their 2011 movie The Intouchables.

The Assembly comes two years after Leigh left her high-profile gig as host of the ABC’s 7.30 program.

Leigh stepped down as presenter in June 2022 after hosting the popular program since 2011, in order to spend time with her two sons James and Daniel.

In her post-7:30 Report life, Sales has been keeping herself busy hosting the ABC docuseries Australian Story.
