Cody Simpson raised eyebrows as he channelled his inner Backstreet Boy at the ARIA Awards on Wednesday, as he lifted the lid on his famous girlfriend Emma McKeon’s shock new hobby.
The singer-turned-competitive swimmer arrived at Australia’s biggest night in music wearing an oversized brown leather jacket with ill-fitted jeans and tinted glasses for a ’90s throwback.
However, the 28-year-old swimmer-turned-singer had major regrets over his outfit of choice, telling presenter Angela Bishop that he wished he’d ditched a certain piece of clothing.Â
When asked if he was ‘done in the pool’ now that he’d returned to his music career, Cody confessed: ‘I’d probably like to jump into a pool right now due to how hot it is.’
‘And I shouldn’t have worn this leather jacket but hey,’ he quipped, as temperatures reached a fever peak of 30 degrees on the red carpet.Â
Later on, Cody exclusively revealed to Daily Mail the sweet way he had been spending time with his Olympic swimmer girlfriend Emma McKeon, who he’s been dating since 2022.

‘I’ve been trying to teach her how to sing,’ he sweetly shared after being asked if he’d ever collaborate on a project with Emma.Â
‘She taught me to swim a few years ago so I’m trying to teach her how to sing.’Â
He added: ‘If we can get there, then we will collaborate, yeah.’Â Â
Cody recently revealed he is returning to music after giving it up to focus on competitive swimming.
The Commonwealth Games gold medallist admitted to finding a newfound passion for music three years after he released his last album.
‘I am working on the return to music. I’m getting a bunch of material together. It is touching on my whole life journey so far lyrically,’ he told The Daily Telegraph.
‘Sound-wise just drawing on the myriad of experiences I’ve had since I was a kid. It almost kind of blends everything I have ever been in a way.’
He added his new music is by far the most personal and reflective he has ever produced in the studio.

‘I feel like it is representative of all of the eras I’ve had rolled into one, trying to figure out how to acknowledge every part of myself and make it feel fresh,’ he said.
‘I had such a break with the swimming stuff… It just feels so new and exciting again and it is really cool to experience that because I thought I was jaded and I am not. It is exciting.’
He added he was working hard to ensure his new music was released early next year.
Cody rose to fame in 2009 as a preteen after uploading clips of him singing to YouTube, which helped launch his musical career.
The singer moved to Los Angeles in 2010 to record music with Atlantic Records, cutting albums at Village Studios in West Los Angeles and performing at the Malibu Guitar Festival and The Troubadour in recent years.
He later became a professional swimmer in 2019 and won a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
He put his music career on hold to try and earn a place at the Paris Olympics with the Australian swimming team, but was ultimately unsuccessful and returned to performing.
