King of the Hill Star’s Neighbor Indicted for Murder

Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez, the neighbor accused of fatally shooting King of the Hill voice actor Jonathan Joss, was indicted on a murder charge on Monday, Bexar County, Texas court records confirm.

Joss, 59, a San Antonio native best known for voicing John Redcorn on the long-running animated series, was shot and killed on June 1 outside his home, the same property that mysteriously went up in flames earlier this year.  

Police say the actor had stopped by to check his mail when Alvarez, his longtime neighbor, pulled up, confronted him, and moments later opened fire with a rifle.

According to a San Antonio Police Department report, Alvarez did not hesitate to admit what he’d done.

When an officer arrived, he allegedly looked directly at him and said: ‘I shot him.’ 

The stunning violence left Joss’s loved ones reeling — including his husband Tristan Kern de Gonzales, who believes hate fueled the killing. 

In a statement, Kern de Gonzales claimed Ceja was ‘homophobic’ and ‘could not stand the sight of two men loving each other.’  

Investigators quickly zeroed in on the pair’s fraught history. 

Neighbors told reporters the men had clashed for years, describing constant tension on the block. 

One woman, who asked not to be identified, said Ceja seemed fed up and claimed Joss frequently yelled up and down the street.

Records back up the picture of a troubled home life. 

Police logs show more than 50 calls to Joss’s address since January 2024 — everything from mental-health concerns and neighbor disputes to welfare checks and the January house fire that destroyed his home. 

Yet no one imagined the feud would escalate into a fatal shooting.

Despite admitting to the killing, Alvarez was released from the Bexar County jail just three days later after a judge set his bond at $200,000. 

His attorney, Nico LaHood, now argues the shooting wasn’t murder at all, but an act of protection.

‘This was leading up, unfortunately,’ LaHood said on June 24. ‘And, as you know, people in Texas have a right not to be a victim. 

‘You have a right to self-defense. You have a right to the defense of third persons legally and under the law, and we believe that applies here.’

Joss’s death sent shock waves through both the animation world and Hollywood. 

The actor voiced John Redcorn for more than a decade on King of the Hill from 1997 to 2009, a role that earned him a loyal fan base. 

He later became a fan favorite again as Chief Ken Hotate on Parks and Recreation.

Former castmates quickly offered heartfelt tributes. 

Chris Pratt wrote on Instagram: ‘Damn. RIP Jonathan. Always such a kind dude. Sad to see. Prayers up. Hug your loved ones.’ 

Nick Offerman told People: ‘The cast has been texting together about it all day and we’re just heartbroken. Jonathan was such a sweet guy and we loved having him as our Chief Ken Hotate. A terrible tragedy.’ 

Joss also made memorable appearances in shows like Walker, Texas Ranger, Charmed, ER, Ray Donovan, and Tulsa King.

He landed film roles as well, including True Grit, The Magnificent Seven, Pocahontas 2: Journey to a New World, and Johnson Family Vacation.

Now, the fate of one of his most beloved characters hangs in limbo.

With three new seasons of rebooted King of the Hill in the works, creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels have not yet said whether John Redcorn will be recast — or whether the show will retire the role altogether.
