I’m A Celeb: Contestants Face Thunderstorm on Wet First Night

They are staring down the barrel of two weeks with little food, enduring gruesome Bushtucker Trials and sleeping outside with the snakes and spiders.

And so the huge thunder and lightening storm that has rolled in over Australia’s Gold Coast and into the I’m A Celebrity jungle is most definitely not helping the situation for the contestants.

The likes of social media and Twitch star AngryGinge, 25, rapper Aitch, 25, model and actress Kelly Brook, 45, Spandau Ballet’s Martin Kemp, 63, and Ruby Wax, 72, are all spending their first night in the jungle.

Lightening and lightening storms for hours battered the camp, which does not do well in wet weather as there is a stream running through which can often overflow.

It comes after ITV producers have been desperately hoping for a dry year as weather can often affect the morale of the campmates who crowd into the Bush Telegraph, sometimes for hours on end, to shelter from the Australian storms.

Brittney Spears’ sister, Jamie Lynn, famously walked out of the show when the relentless rain became too much for her back in 2023.

She was followed shortly by food critic, Grace Dent, who also flew home due to low morale.

No contestants walked last year, but the camp was plagued with the worst rain in the ITV show’s 22 year history.

A camp insider told the Daily Mail: ‘The jungle camp cannot cope with this level of rain and the thing is, when it rains like this, it’s not fun for anyone involved. In fact, it’s miserable. It dampens the mood and ultimately ruins the show.’

Love Island star, Maura Higgins, last year complained: ‘I’ve slept in the rain, my bed is just soaking.’

Strictly Come Dancing’s Oti Mabuse added: ‘It has been raining again in camp and it’s affecting everyone’s mood.’

While the weather forecast this year promises more sunshine, it’s not looking good for the new tranche of celebrities so far.

Contestant Kelly Brook has recently revealed her biggest fear about entering the I’m A Celebrity jungle – and it has nothing to do with Bushtucker Trials.

The ITV reality show, fronted by Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, returns to screens on Sunday and will once again be airing from Australia.

And now Kelly, 45, who once swore she’d never sign up for the show until being inspired by her husband Jeremy Parisi, admitted that the thought of going without food is already playing on her mind.

She told her Heart Radio co-host Jason King that hunger could push her over the edge, confessing: ‘I think the hunger really gets to you. I’m just not myself when I’m hungry.’

Laughing, Jason teased her: ‘You’re like that at five-fifty in the evening – and you can’t just Deliveroo in there!’

Food is notoriously scarce in camp, with contestants surviving mainly on small portions of beans and rice unless they win stars in the trials.

Former campmate James Haskell previously described the experience as ‘starvation,’ revealing he struggled to even get out of bed from exhaustion.

But while hunger worries her, Kelly admitted another major fear still lingers – the giant ‘unpredictable’ spiders.

‘You don’t know where they’re going to jump around’ she said before adding another fear to the list: ‘And also just not being able to wash.’
