Dan Stevens Critiques Sydney Sweeney’s Response to American Eagle Controversy

Dan Stevens has joined the Sydney Sweeney pile-on after the actress issued a very vague response when quizzed on white supremacy relating to her controversial American Eagle campaign.

The Euphoria actress, 28, currently stars in new biopic Christy, however the movie’s lacklustre reception – including one of the lowest ever domestic openings for a wide release – has set tongues wagging.

Sydney’s controversies came to a head this year when it was revealed she was a registered Republican voter and starred in a controversial American Eagle jeans advert which some deemed racist due to a pun linking ‘jeans’ and ‘genes’.

And when given the chance to address claims the ad condoned ‘genetic superiority,’ Sydney recently dodged the opportunity to either defend or apologise for the campaign.

Instead, she issued a vague response that neither refuted the white supremacism claims nor agreed with them, simply stating: ‘I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear.’

Now, English actor Dan has made a cutting criticism of her comments, as he reshared a post which read: ‘Sydney Sweeney’s GQ interview is a reminder that “not having a stance” on white supremacy is 100% having a stance on white supremacy.’

Another star who targeted Sydney was Ruby Rose, who issued a blistering takedown.

The Orange Is The New Black star, 39, took to Threads on Monday evening to hit out at Sydney for the role.

In her online tangent, she hit out at Sydney, as she claimed she was originally set to play Christy, who she calls ‘Cherry’ in the message, and claimed that the original line-up was nearly entirely queer. She then claimed Sydney ‘hates gay people’.

She wrote: ‘The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry.

‘Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time.

‘For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the “people”. None of “the people” want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us.

‘You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.’

Sydney was at the centre of controversy as result of an ad campaign for American Eagle that referred to her genetics.

The label’s autumn advertising rollout, centred around the actress, had the tagline, ‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.’

‘Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair colour, personality and even eye colour… my genes are blue,’ Sydney said an accompanying video.

In the fallout, critics of the ad campaign said it promoted racial dog whistling, while President Donald Trump showed enthusiastic support for the actress and the brand.

While most expected the star to either defend the advert and insist it had been misconstrued by the public, or else express regret for the negative interpretation, she chose to do neither.

Instead, she suggested she was unperturbed by the backlash and wasn’t on either side of the debate, as she side-stepped all questions about the controversy.

Speaking to GQ about the backlash, Sydney minimised her role, stating: ‘I did a jean ad. The reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.’

Critics accused the brand of echoing eugenicist language around ‘good genes’ and ‘genetic superiority’, claiming it appealed to right-wing and white-nationalist groups online.

Christy follows the incredible story of the boxer’s rise to becoming America’s most well-known female boxer in the 1990s, and later her coach-turned-husband’s 2010 attempted murder of her and also her battle with her sexuality.

After escaping her controlling husband, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison for attempted second-degree murder, she went on to marry her rival Lisa Holewyne in 2017, after which she become an advocate for domestic violence survivors.

Ruby took particular umbrage with the use of a straight woman playing a queer character, before making her explosive ‘hatred’ comment.

Sydney previously said of depicting the sportswoman: ‘I felt like I had a whole new superpower when I was her. I learned how to be strong and stand up for myself, and I just felt … invincible, almost…

‘Christy has such an amazing strength to her that she just has carried her entire life, and I really felt that while I was filming…

‘And I think it’s carried on into my personal life. But I’ve kind of always known who I am, and I’ve had really supportive friends and family around me, so that has definitely been super helpful. But I learned a lot through Christy.’

Hours before Ruby’s outburst, Sydney hit back after Christy- which follows the life of esteemed boxer and domestic abuse survivor Christy Martin – tanked at the box office. Taking to Instagram on Monday, the actress shared an impassioned post.

Over the weekend, Christy, which ranked in the top 12 worst ever for movies showing on more than 2000 screens, grossed a meagre $1.3million after being released in 2,011 cinemas – averaging $649 per venue, according to The Wrap.

She found herself at the centre of several media storms over her political views, endured the end of a seven-year relationship and appeared to be given the cold shoulder by her peers at big A-list events.

In response to her critics, Sydney wrote on Monday: ‘I am so deeply proud of this movie. proud of the film david made. proud of the story we told…

‘Proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin. this experience has been one of the greatest honors of my life…

‘This film stands for survival, courage, and hope. through our campaigns, we’ve helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence. we all signed on to this film with the belief that christy’s story could save lives…

‘thank you to everyone who saw, felt, and believed and will believe in this story for years to come. if christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded. so yes I’m proud…

‘why? because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. and christy has been the most impactful project of my life. thank you christy. i love you.’
