Karla Sofía Gascón Explains Absence from Selena Gomez’s Wedding After Emilia Perez Scandal

Selena Gomez wed Benny Blanco in a glamorous, star-studded soiree earlier this year – but one person missing from the party was her controversial Emilia Perez co-star Karla Sofía Gascón.

Now Gascón has revealed why she was unable to make the nuptials.

While attending the Los40 Music Awards in Valencia, Spain, Gascón, 53, said work obligations kept her from being at the wedding.

In an interview conducted in Spanish, Gascón told the organization she hasn’t been able to attend her own family member’s wedding, let alone afford being a guest at Gomez’s nuptials.

When the topic of her absence came up, she replied: ‘I’m working. Imagine, I don’t even go to my family’s.

‘Because there’s a lot of money to spend. Imagine if I had to pay at Selena’s. No, no. I’d be ruined!’ she finished with a cackle.

The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Gomez for comment but did not immediately hear back.

Gomez tied the knot with music producer Blanco just north of Santa Barbara in late September.

While Gascón was not present, Gomez’s Emilia Perez co-stars Zoe Saldana and Édgar Ramírez were able to celebrate in person.

It was only months earlier that Hollywood was toasting Gomez and Gascón’s film Emilia Perez – until a tweet scandal cast a shadow over it.

Gascón became the first trans woman to be nominated for an acting Oscar and was heavily favored to win the award, until racist tweets she made years earlier plunged her into controversy.

Unearthed by journalist Sarah Hagi, the posts made by Karla in 2020 and 2021 spewed anti-Islam and racist rhetoric.

As a result of the subsequent backlash, the actress opted not to attend the BAFTA, SAG and Goya Awards in the height of this past awards season.

One posted in November 2020 read: ‘I’m sorry. Is it just my impression or is there more muslims in Spain? Every time I go to pick up my daughter from school there are more women with their hair covered and their skirts down to their heels. Next year instead of English we’ll have to teach Arabic.’

In September 2020, she posted an image of a Muslim family eating at a restaurant, where the wife was in a full black burqa, along with a sarcastic comment.

‘Islam is marvelous, without any machismo,’ she wrote. ‘Women are respected, and when they are so respected they are left with a little squared hole on their faces for their eyes to be visible and their mouths, but only if she behaves. Although they dress this way for their own enjoyment. How DEEPLY DISGUSTING OF HUMANITY.’

She also tweeted about the Black Lives Matter riots sparked by George Floyd’s death in police custody, in another post that drew brickbats.

‘I really think that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict swindler, but his death has served to once again demonstrate that there are people who still consider black people to be monkeys without rights and consider policemen to be assassins. They are both wrong,’ wrote Gascón.

Gascón apologized for for the posts but had insisted she is not a racist.

‘As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain,’ she said in a statement via Netflix, where her film can be streamed.

‘All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.’

Gascón was a regular in Mexican telenovelas before transitioning in 2018. In Emilia Pérez, she plays both a menacing cartel kingpin and the woman who emerges after the kingpin fakes his own death. Years later, her character contacts the lawyer who facilitated her transition to help her reunite with her wife and their children.
