Viewers of Michael McIntyre’s Big Show puzzled by Eric Cantona’s unusual singing performance: ‘Still waiting for the punchline, but it never came’

Viewers were left baffled after Eric Cantona made an unusual appearance during Michael McIntyre’s Big Show on Saturday night.

The pre-recorded show stunned fans as the former professional footballer, 57, performed on stage to sing his song The Friends We Lost from his upcoming album Cantona Sings.

Eric, who embarked on a tour in October last year, will be returning to the stage in April – after his album releases on March 29.

The French footballer-turned-singer, who played for Manchester United, left fans speechless as they saw him grace the stage with his new single.

Fans flood X, formerly known as Twitter, to comment on his ‘weird’ performance, claiming they were convinced his performance was one of Michael’s jokes.

‘Just seen Eric Cantona trying to sing on Big Show How Bizzarre!! What the hell was that.’

‘I caught Eric Cantona’s performance on Michael McIntyre’s show. I appear to be in the minority but I thought it was brilliant. It’s people like him that make this world so much more bonkers and interesting.’

‘OMG just watch Eric Cantona sing on BBC what ?? Wind up??’

‘Guessing the Eric Cantona ‘singing’ is a skit set up by the gorgeous Michael McIntyre, if not then I could have a new career after all! This cannot be real.’

After his performance, Michael asked: ‘Tell me, how do you like singing compared to playing football? What’s the feeling like in front of a crowd?’

Eric responded: ‘I played football, I did acting, going onstage in theatres. I think music, to be onstage in music, live in music, is as strong as football.’

Michael quipped: ‘So ooh ahh, that’s a problem isn’t it? When you go on tour, are you worried that the crowd are going to sing more than you, when you go to Manchester?’

Michael said: ‘You don’t mind if they all sing Ooh, Ah, Cantona… when you are trying to sing The Friends We Lost Along The Way?’

Eric: ‘As soon as they listen to me when I sing, yes. In between the songs, yeah. We’re sharing time.’
