Shannen Doherty Opens Up to Jason Priestley about Her Struggles on Beverly Hills, 90210 Due to a Troubled Marriage with Ashley Hamilton: ‘I Recognize I Became a Significant Challenge’

Brenda and Brandon Walsh were reunited Monday when Jason Priestley, 54, was the guest on the Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty podcast. 

Shannen, 52, who was spotted enjoying a night out with a friend, invited her on-screen brother to take a walk down memory lane and discuss their experiences on Beverly Hills, 90210. 

The Heathers star, who looked healthy in spite of her battle with stage four breast cancer, quickly got down to some of the nitty-gritty of her time on the show and admitted  ‘I definitely went through a lot of growing pains on that show.

‘There were beautiful moments for me and really hard moments for me toward my last season,’ she added. Doherty talked about how hard it was to do the show when she was in a bad marriage to Ashley Hamilton.

Her character was written off the show at the end of season four when it was revealed Brenda was going to study acting in England.

Behind the scenes, the young actress was going through a lot of personal turmoil that she kept to herself. 

‘I was in a really horrible marriage, and there were things that were transpiring in that marriage that made it really hard for me to be on time for work,’ she revealed while acknowledging her tardiness had repercussion for the cast and crew who ended up working even longer days that expected. 

‘And I know that that became a very big problem for the rest of you, as it should be.’

At the time, the actress was married to fellow actor Ashley Hamilton, 49, who was dealing with drug addiction. 

Shannen confided there were times she was afraid to leave her house for fear he would go and buy drugs. 

‘It wasn’t anybody’s responsibility by mine, but I sort of wish I would have been sat down and sort of looked at and said, “Listen, the end result is going to be this, you are going to get fired and none of us are willing to put up with it anymore,”‘ she said.

Instead, Jason was given the job of ‘quarterbacking’ the situation. 

‘It was incredibly difficult,’ the Wild Cars actor said.

‘And I wish that I would have known more about what was happening in your personal life at the time, because I could have hopefully managed it with more compassion and more caring, but we only knew what we what we knew.’

The two starred as twins Brenda and Brandon Walsh on the popular night time drama, until Shannen was fired after season four due to tardiness and other issues

The actress said she wished an executive had sat her down to discuss her actions, but instead Jason was asked to ‘quarterback’ the situation. ‘I wish that I would have known more about what was happening in your personal life at the time,’ the actor said

Shannen said she knew 90210 was a hit when the show made the cover of Rolling Stone, but looking back at the photo of herself, Jason and the late Luke Perry, she realized, ‘this is inappropriate for brother and sister… we’re ourselves in that, but, I’m like straddling you’

Not all of their memories about their time together on the show were negative.  

‘I think Brenda and Brandon were always so interesting because we had an interesting relationship,’ Shannen said, to which Jason laughingly agreed.

‘There was this sexual undertone of Brenda and Brandon that to this day is hysterical,’ she stated. 

The Young Artist Award winner said she knew the show had made it when they were featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

Looking back at the photo that includes herself, Jason and the late Luke Perry, Shannen said she realized ‘this is inappropriate for brother and sister and the you look at the cover of Rolling Stone and sure, we’re ourselves in that, but, I’m like straddling you.’
