Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Shine at CFDA Awards, Win for Luxury Brand

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen looked radiant in matching black ensembles as they made a rare joint appearance on the red carpet on Monday night.

The twin sisters, 39, both wore long black floor-length blazers as they attended the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.

The siblings accepted the American Accessory Designer of the Year Award for their billion-dollar luxury brand The Row which they launched in 2006.

Mary-Kate gave a speech with Ashley beside her thanking their supporters.

She said: ‘To our amazing customers who truly give us the opportunity to do what we love, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you.’

They also thanked their family for giving them ‘the love and kindness’ that allows them ‘to show up to work each day.’

The appearance is rare for the sisters who have in recent years stayed out of the spotlight.

In September they stepped out to attend a New York Fashion Week party thrown by W Magazine and Bloomingdale’s.

The now elusive Olsen twins looked worlds away from their high-octane past of megawatt glamour and scandalous rumours.

They projected an image of muted elegance when they broke cover at New York Fashion Week, posing alongside W’s editor-in-chief Sara Moonves, the daughter of disgraced CBS mogul Les Moonves.

In a casual touch, Mary-Kate flung a print sweater over a simple grey top, which she teamed with black trousers, matching boots and a leather handbag.

Ashley meanwhile obscured her top behind a long black coat and a voluminous scarf, slipping into a set of acid-wash jeans for her latest outing.

The child stars grew up up on the world stage, but as the duo reached adulthood they shunned the limelight almost altogether and quit acting for good – instead transitioning into the fashion world.

The Olsen twins first shot to fame when they were just six months old starring on Full House, an American sitcom which ran from 1987 until 1995.

The sisters, although not technically identical, both played the character of Michelle Tanner from the age of nine months old in 1987 until the show ended in 1995.

By the mid-nineties, the Olsen twins, then just eight years old, were already stars – and also had a production company called Dualstar, to their names, from which their TV movies were born.

When Full House ended, the sisters were instantly thrust into their next project – their feature film debut It Takes Two, starring Steve Guttenberg.

For the remainder of the nineties and the early noughties, Mary-Kate and Ashley were rarely off screens, jet-setting around the world to film in locations including Rome, Paris, The Bahamas and London.

The twins became household names for a generation of young women who were raised on the twins’ coming-of-age teen TV movies including titles like Winning London, When in Rome and New York Minute.

When they turned 18 in 2004, the twins became co-presidents of Dualstar and expanded the business to release a line of products including fragrances and home decor.

Now dedicating their time to fashion where they work behind the scenes and rarely offer interviews, Mary-Kate and Ashley have embarked upon entirely different lives, marrying and having children behind the scenes.

Meanwhile their younger sister Elizabeth, 36, who has appeared in several Marvel films, is now the acting Hollywood star in the family.

Away from showbusiness, the sisters had founded luxury fashion brand The Row in 2006. Established in New York City, the label, which makes clothing, footwear, bags and accessories, now sells in 37 countries around the world.

It began with a seven-piece capsule collection which consisted of the ‘perfect’ T-shirt, a pair of leggings and a cashmere dress, among other items – all of which were snapped up by department story Barneys New York immediately.

The Row went from strength to strength, leading to the sisters buying a site in Paris in 2011 before adding a studio in Tribeca in 2012 – and expanding out to London in 2019.
