Silverchair fans’ hopes of a reunion have been given a boost following an exchange between bandmates on social media.
Frontman Daniel Johns took to Instagram recently to promote his semi-autobiographical featurette What If The Future Never Happened.
Johns shared two photos that showed him with actor Rasmus King, who plays Daniel in the short.
The singer is hitting the road to screen the short, alongside an hour-long conversation focusing on his long and storied career.
‘What If The Future Never Happened? is like a VHS copy of a copy of your childhood rioting in your mind,’ Daniel captioned the images.
‘It’s both honesty and fantasy at the same time and it’s up to the audience to determine where the lines are drawn. Newcastle and Brisbane sold-out, final tix available for Sydney and Melbourne in bio.’

The post was met with a flurry of comments from fans and followers, not least from former Silverchair bandmate Ben Gillies.
The drummer commented on the post, revealing that Johns had treated Gillies to a preview screening of the film.
‘Hi Dan. Thanks for the preview screening. Really enjoyed it. Wishing you all the best with the shows,’ Ben commented.
The post came as quite a surprise for Silverchair fans, with Johns, Gillies and bass player Chris Joannou famously falling out after their 2011 breakup.
Gillies’ comment was met with thousands of likes and hopes that the iconic indie rock trio could reunite on stage or in the studio.
‘That’s beautiful, man,’ one fan wrote.
‘Forget music, hope you guys can connect to grow old as mates having a laugh about it all. Friendship is everything. Life is only once. Long live the “tentacle.”‘
A second chimed in with a hopeful: ‘So lovely to see you in this comment section. My heart is happy now.’

A third added: ‘@bengillies888 love this!! I’m sure you realise the gravity, or how meaningful this is to fans.’
It didn’t end there, either with one fan claiming that if the Gallagher brothers can bury the hatchet, so can Silverchair.
‘If Oasis could reunite, Silverchair can do it too,’ they wrote.
Since their 2011 split, the relationship between the trio has been strained at best.
Speaking about the band in the 2021 podcast series Who Is Daniel Johns, the frontman all but scuttled hopes of a Silverchair reunion.
‘I wouldn’t get Silverchair back together for $1 million with a gun to my head,’ he said.
Further, in 2023, Ben and Chris took part in an episode of Australian Story on the ABC ahead of the release of the pair’s memoir Love and Pain.
Fans were surprised after Australian Story announced on social media that ABC had removed part one of A Silver Lining from its streaming platform ABC iview.

At the time, The Daily Telegraph reported that Johns and his brother Heath (who runs label BMG Music Australia), had not given ABC the rights to publish Silverchair’s music on iView.
Johns finally set the record straight on Sunday, posting a lengthy essay to Instagram explaining why he chose not to give ABC permission to republish his songs.
‘I would have preferred to say nothing but here are the facts,’ he wrote.
‘Australian Story reached out to me via my team ‘as a courtesy’ on August 11 to let me know that they were doing a story on [Gillies] and [Joannou]. I was and remain incredibly supportive of them telling their story,’ he continued.
‘I was asked at the end of filming to be interviewed about their contribution to the band and although I wished them all the best, I respectfully declined for one reason.’
The reason was that Johns had nothing to do with Gillies and Joannou’s memoir, and he said he felt uncomfortable ‘promoting’ the book without knowing what they had written about him.
However, speaking to Daily Mail earlier this month, Gillies’ wife Jackie – a celebrity psychic – said a Silverchair reunion is not out of the realm of possibility.
‘I will say this: Never say never,’ she said.
‘I’m gonna tell you why. Because who people are today is not who people are tomorrow. Right?’
