Gladiators Jodie Ounsley broke down in tears as she tried ‘life-changing’ new technology ahead of appearing on the rebooted TV show.
Professional Exeter Chiefs rugby player, 22, became emotional as she put on glasses which allow deaf people to ‘see’ conversations for the first time, developed by British start-up XRAI Glass.
Jodie – or ‘Fury’ as she will be called on the BBC series – has been deaf from birth and wears a cochlear implant.
She then told XRAI Glass’s co-founder Mitchell Feldman: ‘That’s pretty amazing… As much as I love to embrace my deafness and be positive about it, it’s a really isolating place at times.
‘You miss out on a lot and it’s a mental journey trying to lip read. Something like this could really make it so much easier.’

A still-stunned Jodie later added: ‘I don’t usually get emotional, but I was so taken aback by XRAI Glass. Even with my cochlear implant, there are still many situations I really struggle with.
‘The fact that they have created something that literally subtitles ‘real life’ is insane. XRAI Glass will ensure I don’t have to miss out as much.’
XRAI Glass’s CEO and co-founder Dan Scarfe added: ‘Jodie is undoubtedly a tough competitor, but to see her so emotional after using XRAI Glass for the first time was incredible.
‘Her reaction is so typical of the response we’ve had from users around the world – it truly is a life-changing experience.’
XRAI Glass was developed after Dan visited his 97-year-old grandfather at Christmas and noticed his hearing was so bad he struggled to engage in conversations and seemed lonely, despite being surrounded by his family.
