Shaun Micallef’s New Comedy Show Promises to Bring Unique Laughs to the ABC

Shaun Micallef is set to return to the ABC with a new comedy show, one year after his long-running Mad As Hell program was axed.

The 61-year-old comedian’s new show was unveiled at the ABC Upfronts in Sydney on Thursday, and it looks to incorporate Micallef’s trademark intellectual comedy.

Micallef said in a statement that his new show will be unlike anything on TV at the moment.

‘It will not feature cooking, home renovations, marriage, singing, sport, RBT units, dogs, wilderness survival, quiz questions, news clips or stock footage,’ he began.

‘It won’t have wearing masks, border security, amazing races, Lego, sitting on a panel or being marooned on an island in your underwear.’

The veteran funnyman has appeared on a wealth of successful ABC shows, including Mad As Hell, The Ex PM and The Micallef Program, as well as several shows on commercial networks.

In September 2022, it was announced Micallef would be publishing a tell-all book called Tripping Over Myself, about the behind-the-scenes secrets of his hit ABC series, Mad As Hell.

The Newstopia star promised fans he wouldn’t be ‘holding back’ in the book, which was published last year.

He even names and shames a politician who whinged about the way they were portrayed on the satirical comedy sketch show.

Hosted by Shaun, Mad as Hell satirised Australian politics and was a consistent ratings winner for the ABC since its debut in 2012.

Describing his new book, Shaun told TV Tonight ‘It’s the story of Mad as Hell, the story of every comedy bit I’ve done.

Micallef said in a statement that his new show will be unlike anything on TV at the moment 

‘It’s subtitled, A Memoir of a Life in Comedy. So I talk about my love of comedy.’

The news came after it was revealed that the ABC axed Mad as Hell in 2022.

Cast and crew were delivered the sad news in July 2022 that the season would be the last for the hit comedy.
