Millie Bobby Brown hits back at criticism of her accent switching from American to British

Millie Bobby Brown has voiced her ‘frustration’ at online trolls who have criticised the actress for switching between an American and British accent during interviews. 

Millie made the comment during her appearance on the Smartless podcast hosted by Hollywood stars Will Arnett, Sean Hayes and Jason Bateman. 

The Stranger Things star claimed that ‘accent-gate’ was ‘such a huge thing for a minute’. 

‘It’s so frustrating because that was everywhere. Like for a second, everyone was talking about my accent, and they had a real problem about it,’ she said. 

The bizarre controversy started last year during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon where she left viewers baffled after she flipped between an American and British accent. 

Millie then caused further confusion when she took to social media to show off her new underwear collection as apart of her Florence by Mills fashion line and fans once again noticed changes in her accent.

Millie with her husband Jake Bongiovi. Millie claims that having family on both sides of the pond has influenced her accent 

Speaking on the podcast she claimed the fluctuation in her accent is due to having British parents but being married to an American – Jon Bon Jovi’s son Jake Bongiovi who she married in May 2024.

‘When I’m around his family, I immediately go into, like, an American accent. But then I was just in England, and then the second I hear my mom and dad’s accent, I just go right back,’ the 21-year-old said. 

Arnett added that he thought it was ‘cool’ how Millie was able to switch ‘in and out’ during conversations.

The actress said that it felt similar to playing a character. 

‘You want me to play these characters, but you expect me not to morph into people. What I hear is what I do. It’s all part of it.

‘I can’t help that when I’m around my fiancé, or when I’m with people like Jimmy Fallon who have a very American accent, I wanna replicate it!

‘And now I’m in England, I wanna replicate that [accent]! I don’t do it intentional, and I’m sorry if it offends you, okay? But listen, I’m trying my best! I’m trying my best,’ she said. 

During her hour-long appearance on the podcast, Millie also spoke about her in-laws who she says are the most down-to-earth people you could meet, 

‘It’s been so great and he (Jon Bon Jovi) is very much there for me and he’s so informative. His wisdom is ridiculous. He’s such a great person,’ Millie said.

On top of this she discussed her upcoming movie with Chris Pratt – The Electric State which is set to premiere on Netflix on March 14.

Millie was born to British parents in Marbella, Spain, before the family moved to Bournemouth, England, when she was four-years-old. 

The family then finally settled in Orlando when she was eight-years-old.
