Reynolds and McElhenney Plan Super Brewery to Revive Wrexham Lager Near Football Ground

Millions have watched the Hollywood stars rescue the struggling local football team in the TV series Welcome to Wrexham.

And now Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have their sights on reviving the fortunes of the North Wales city’s other famous export – its beer.

The actors have submitted a planning application for a Wrexham Lager super brewery and vistor centre right next to the football ground.

Since they bought Wrexham AFC five years ago, the club has risen from the non-league to England’s second tier.

In addition, the Disney+ documentary following the club’s story has focused global attention on the city, and seen tourist numbers boom to two million a year.

Last year, Deadpool star Reynolds and McElhenney, both 48, took co-ownership of Wrexham Lager, which already sponsors the football team.

One of the oldest lagers in the world, it was famously served on the Titanic.

Now Reynolds wants to open a venue to ‘provide an attractive welcome to the city of Wrexham’.

It would include tasting rooms for visitors and football fans. The application reads: ‘The Wrexham Lager proposals, consisting a brewery and associated taproom and museum, will utilise existing buildings on the site.’

The success of Wrexham has been documented over four seasons of the Disney+ series, with many scenes filmed in the Turf, a pub on the corner of the Racecourse ground.

Two million visitors – an increase of 21 per cent in five years – spent around £179 million in the city last year.
