Josh Gad recalls unusual encounter with bathrobe-clad Jeff Goldblum

Josh Gad has revealed how the first time he met Jeff Goldblum was just as wacky as one might expect, recalling how the Hollywood star nearly flashed his private parts in a ‘surreal, welcome-to-Hollywood moment.’

Gad, 43, opened up about the unusual encounter during his appearance on Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast where he shared tales of his early days in Hollywood.

The Frozen star explained that when he first moved to the area, an old college friend reached out with an offer to hangout with her and her boyfriend.

‘I had a girlfriend from college who was — when I had just arrived in LA out of school — who was like, “Hey. I saw that you’re out here. My boyfriend and I would love to have you over. If you have nowhere to go, just come chill with us tonight.” So I was like, “Oh, cool.”‘

However, Gad started to realize that this might not just be a regular boyfriend as he continued: ‘He lived in a real place called Mount Olympus. That is not just where Greek gods live, but where Hollywood gods live.

‘So I’m driving up on this rainy night, I’m 23 years old, and I’m like, “Who the hell is her boyfriend?” He lives in a mythical god land, a kingdom.’

The Love & Other Drugs star continued: ‘And so I get to this house, and there’s this giant gate that looks like it’s out of Jurassic Park.

‘And I knock on the door, and my friend and her boyfriend open the door in matching bathrobes. And it is Jeff Goldblum.’

He continued: ‘They invite me in and he’s like, “Oh, hey, you must be Josh.” And I’m like, “I am Josh. You must be Jeff Goldblum. I know this because I know your work.”‘

The night only proceeded to get stranger for The Book of Mormon star as he then found himself having to do acting exercises with Goldblum, 73, during ‘the most surreal evening of my life’.

He explained the couple’s home had ‘this weird sort of triangular seating arrangement where the two of them are sitting in these cushion chairs, and I’m at the point on the other end sitting opposite them.’

Gad continued: ‘Jeff proceeds to engage me in a game of call-and-repeat acting, something called ‘the Meisner Technique. So he starts saying words and having me repeat them.’

However, concentrating on the task wasn’t made easy due to Goldblum’s attire.

‘And like, I’m pretty sure his ball sack wasn’t hanging out, but was pretty close to it,’ Gad joked.

The experience made Gad feel like he was being recruited for Goldblum’s acting class, as he explained: ‘At the end of this very surreal exchange, he looks at me and he goes, “You’re very good. You should come audit one of my classes.”

‘And I was like, “Was I invited over here to give Jeff Goldblum another student in his Los Angeles acting class?” It was such a surreal, welcome-to-Hollywood moment.’

Gad noted: ‘I thought I was in an episode of Punk’d.’

While he didn’t accept the offer to attend a class, the actor was ‘thrilled to get a personal invitation from Jeff Goldblum in a bathrobe in his home.’

Thankfully all worked out well for Gad who has enjoyed success by voicing characters in Frozen, A Dog’s Purpose, and animated musical series, Central Park.

Elsewhere, he has appeared in hit films such as Beauty and the Beast, 21,  Murder on the Orient Express, and Jobs.

Meanwhile, Goldblum is famously known for his roles in Jurassic Park, The Big Chill, The Grand Budapest Hotel and Annie Hall.

The actor most recently portrayed The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in hit musical film, Wicked.
