As Halloween approaches, horror fans are on the hunt for the perfect scare – and few recommendations carry more weight than one from Stephen King himself.
The master of horror has praised countless films and shows over the years, but French Netflix series Marianne in particular left him unsettled.
The legendary author, whose name is synonymous with nightmares, once called the show ‘perfect for sickos like me who enjoy being scared.’
In a viral post on X, King wrote: ‘There are glints of humor that give it a Stranger Things vibe. It also has [I say it with all due modesty] a Stephen King vibe.’
Created by Samuel Bodin, Marianne is a French supernatural horror series that follows best-selling author Emma Larsimon, who discovers that the horrifying witch from her novels might actually exist in real life.
When a childhood friend delivers a chilling warning, Emma returns to her small coastal hometown – only to find that the evil she thought she’d left on the page has begun to seep into the real world.
Blending witchcraft, possession, and psychological dread, the eight-episode series quickly spirals into a nightmarish descent that fans and critics alike have called one of Netflix’s most disturbing originals.
When King tweeted his seal of approval back in 2019, horror lovers immediately took notice.

King’s viral tweet recommending Marianne sparked a frenzy among horror lovers, with fans calling it ‘the scariest show ever’
‘Oh, cool. S***s my pants in advance*,’ one X user joked.
Another wrote, ‘Weird how recommendations from one of my fav authors can make me put down a book and turn on a show.’
Others quickly added it to their Halloween watchlists. ‘That’s all I need to hear. I’m going to watch it now,’ one person said, while another warned, ‘It’s crazy. Don’t watch alone.’
One IMDb reviewer raved: ‘The acting was great, the setting and buildup just right and executed correctly. The twists were really good and that ending means we need a season two.’
Though Marianne was canceled after just one season, its legend has only grown – and if viewers take the advice of the ultimate horror guru this Halloween, they may find themselves as ‘scarred for life’ as everyone else.
